Florida

Here I come.

The snow keeps coming down here in Chicago and I am finally escaping for a brief time. Maybe it will have melted by the time I get home. Who am I kidding? It will be snowing in April.

The other day (and night) a car was parked roughly a block away from our apartment. Every time the wind blew for over twenty-four hours the very loud, obnoxious alarm went off. It went off every 3-5 minutes until the battery died. Joe walked by the car on his way to school after a sleep-less night and saw two tickets and 10 hate notes under the windshield wipers. Our favorite hate mail was the one that detailed every time the alarm went off while this person was trying to watch the Olympics. 12:03, 12:05, 12:08... I admit that I composed at least 10 notes of my own in my head but I didn't want to go out in the snow to deliver it. I think there is a ring of hell reserved for these offenders. A really cold, obnoxious ring.

Well, off to double check my packing. Its so hard to go from winter to summer (not that I am complaining, I wish I didn't have to come back to Chicago til May). I have to remember that even my light sweaters will not be helpful in Florida.

I'm so happy for you getting to get away from the cold for a while! I don't think i could do it. Quite a sacrifice for your man and your family! Enjoy Florida :) Sorry about that car alarm. Those are the worst.

I hope it is cozy and warm in Florida! Laura was totally humiliated by her car's alarm which she could not turn off - very embarassing! And I very much sympathize with trying to figure out what to pack - your body can not identify warm weather clothes needs when you are under a snowdrift!

"Yippee" for FL, "Boo" for all night car alarms!

One night in late Nov or early Dec, I was wrapping some packages to send to a friend in Iraq and another friend in the Peace Corps for Christmas. I hear this annoying sound coming from the parking lot of my apartment complex. It sounded like someone was just laying on the horn of their car - no letting up, a constant HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONK!! *UGH* So I bundle up, step out onto the balcony (as apparently one or two other residents had done) and listened.....only to determine it was MY car horn that was going off! YIKES! I literally had to run to the car and pull out the fuse to get the thing to stop!! I felt incredibly small at that point, and really embarrassed. I'm glad no one got to my car before I did...I might have gotten a few hate notes myself!

i learned in class the other day that taste buds begin to develop in the first 7-8wks in the womb; if babies develop taste that young wouldn't that mean they're alive and abortion in murder? surprised my teacher is allowed to teach such things ;)

Valentine's day, a day late.

Joe pulled an all-nighter on Sunday night and still managed to take me out to a lovely dinner (and with a coupon! yes!) in the city. Here's what we ate:

Let me tell you that caffeine has never really effected me. I have never had a sleepless night because I had a coke or some coffee in the evening. But apparently if I go three months with only the very occasional cup of tea a soda and a tiny teacup of decaf coffee will really send me over the edge. I didn't sleep til the sun came up! I am going to have to re-build my tolerance when this baby (plum sized now) is born! Yikes!

nice! that swordfish looked really, really good. and i know those cups--all too well.

The Sitch.

(Situation)

We have three cats, a overly full, very tiny apartment, and a crazy year ahead.

As I have previously mentioned, I'm pregnant. This week is #11 (almost 3 months along) in this journey which so far has been cake... or pie. I like pie better. Today I went and switched my care (after one not so great appointment at the local ob group) over to a midwife group in the 'burbs. I am so pleased that there are really cool, nice midwives within 30 minutes of us and that I feel like I already know them since a friend from church just delivered a baby with them two weeks ago. So. Things are great, I have been extraordinarily well and happy. Joe hasn't really had time to feel/say anything about the whole baby thing as he is in the midst of hades. (This quarter has been by FAR the worst yet and hopefully will not be repeated. He has been so good about trying to come home for dinner a couple times each week but even that has been hard for him to manage.) I, however, have been reveling in my status as giver-of-the-first-grandchild-on-both-sides and researching tons about everything related to this (very planned, fyi) pregnancy. This is how our year is looking:

March- Chill. Turn 25. Weeks 14-18.
April- Pack. Weeks 18-22 (half way!).
May- Move stuff to storage. Joe has finals @ the same time. La's 'rents help, take kitties home. Weeks 22-26.
June- Joe has unpaid internship somewhere. Las Vegas? Austin? DC? Des Moines? Weeks 26-30.
July- Ditto. Weeks 30-35.
August- Ditto. Or maybe move back to Chicago? 3rd Anniversary! Weeks 35-40 (baby:cooked).
September- Due the 2nd. Move back to Chicago mid month with a 2 week old? La's 'rents return kitties?
October- Joe starts class. Baby 1 mo.
November- Joe class. Thanksgiving, St Louis? Baby 2 mo.
December- Joe class. Christmas. Baby 3 mo.

Let me tell you folks. Its going to be awesome. It has been really sweet of people to send/give baby gifts already but we are quickly running out of space! If we have any showers I don't think I can ask for anything but gift cards as we won't have an apartment to keep stuff in until the baby is here, in all likelyhood. I am happy to say that we will be in a 2 bedroom place this coming year! I am pretty used to being in limbo about plans for each coming year but it is such a different feeling when you know you are not just thinking about two hip twenty-somethings who can live anywhere. Add a baby and things always go a little haywire. But wow. So, there you have it. Straight from the horses mouth.

Questions?
Me too!

It would be wonderful if you and Junior could make it to FL for Christmas!!

P.S. Even though I said Junior, I'm predicting a girl.

i ate supper over at bunny's tonight with your dad, bunny, kent/meghan/jared, and mark/mary. your dad grilled salmon and it was phenomenal. but meghan and i talked about how excited we are that you're coming to visit. pretty excited. on a different note, all my science classes (especially musculoskeletal anatomy) are really making me realize a little bit about how phenomenal the things that happen in a womb are. it's r.i.d.i.c.u.l.o.u.s. anyway, glad you're enjoying it. amazing stuff.

We are so happy for you two :) and just remember - baby doesn't need much more than you two and diaper changes. (Unless it snows, then bring on the warm stuff!)

I'm very much glad that you've found the mid-wife practice. A quote from somewhere: Midwives are trained to facilitate labor and delivery. Obstetricians are trained to deal with problems in labor and delivery. My point, if the obs don't have a problem to deal with, they sometimes manage to create one. So go with a midwife and she'll call in the obs if needed. :)

I am so thrilled to see this!! : ) Thank you!!

Reminds me of moving to Germany when I was 7 months pregnant with Joseph. Difference is it wasn't "pie;" I was throwing up every day. I am very, very happy you two aren't having to deal with that along with the school and uncertainties. I'm grateful you're so obliging and encouraging to Joseph with his work load. It won't last forever!

    Much love, Mom
