Being Sick Is No Fun

Even less fun is being sick enough on a Sunday that I missed church, and Dad did, too.

That is the first time that I've missed church for being ill in about 5-6 years, and perhaps about the same amount of time between that and the one before it.

Bleh. Hopefully, I'll be well enough to go tonight.

I hope you all are feeling better than me!

I know how you feel...that was me last week. Hope your illness is as short-lived as mine was. It was terrible, but quick.

Well, the good news is, it'll be about 5-6 more years before you miss church again!

I started reading aloud at night, but Jonathan took over so he would not fall asleep...so he's been challenged to get the accents *just right*...when he needs help, the girls step in! We have enjoyed the reading so much. Brian Jacques was a wonderful author!

How would you like a world with no sickness? No sneezing? No more making that gunk-stuck-halfway-between-your-throat-and-your-nose snort in the middle of class? Then vote for Gore.

Despite my name, I am in fact the most peaceful man in the world. It's not fair that Gandhi gets all the press.

I'm hoping to learn it by Summertime, which I'm pretty sure I can do. I've got quite a bit of the song down, but I really need to work on my transition from one part to the next, and I have difficulty with the pedal around the 1:20 minute mark (it's difficult to get the exact placement for when to lift, so that it sounds the same as Jarrod Radnich).

I'm really wanting to expand my music library, it always seems I only know about five songs at a time, so I end up just playing the same five over and over again. I know more, but my skill level keeps changing, so that as I'm learning new songs, it's less interesting to play the older, easier ones. Not to say I don't play them at all though, I still go back every now and then. There are about five songs I'm looking to print off, but I haven't had access to a printer for about two weeks, and so the only song I've been learning is the above Pirates song, which is a challenge, but I would prefer playing more than just this over and over again.

A friend was telling me that a good way to learn better sight-reading was to go through the song book, and now she's one of the better sight-readers, so I hear (I haven't heard her play all that much). I would like to do that eventually, but sight-reading the chords is so hard, which is the point, so I hope I'll gather some courage to actually do it eventually.

I should really get started on it. I really, really should. My motivation gets really low though, when I start and takes forever to do the first song. I understand the concept of undertaking a big project that will take a while, but I can't seem to grasp actually doing it.

"990," is your songbook the "Praise for the Lord," 'cause that our songbook, and I believe it has 990 songs in it.

There have been songs that I've wanted to learn, and probably could have, but didn't have the morale to go on with it. It was this way with "Linus and Lucy," I got it for Christmas and have only gotten the classic beginning of it down. I need to work on getting through a song with both hands, no matter how long it takes, 'cause I've noticed that every song I've learned, I've only made real progress after getting through the whole thing. That might seem rather obvious, but I'm saying, get through the first time (which is definitely not going to be perfect or up to speed; at least, not in my experience), instead of learning one hand, learning the other hand, and then squishing them together. I find progress is smoother when playing both hands and gradually getting faster than learning each hand separately.

We've got a Hymns for Worship and a few supplements too, but the congregation we go to uses Praise for the Lord.

Oh yes, keeping time is difficult. We have a metronome (technically it's my brother's-in-law, but he hasn't come retrieved it), but I'm suspicious whether it helps me or not. It's incredibly difficult to know if I'm on the right beat, as I'm playing. I can do it perfectly fine while singing, at church or something, but for piano, I totally lose all ability. All I can perceive is the order in which I press the keys, other than that I've only got a vague idea of what the tempo feels like. What I do instead is watch a video of someone that already knows how to play it over and over again, and then mimic their movements. In the future, I hope to get a better feel for doing it right though.

What song is that? One of Liszt's songs you're learning?

Sounds kind of like a classical piece in a way. There's only a couple reasons I can see why they'd use two hands. 1. To make it easier, which, if they can play the rest of the song, doesn't seem to me that it should be a problem, or 2. To give the left hand something to do while you're waiting for it's part to come up, which would be more for viewers.

Ah, you're a Nintendo fan? I find Nintendo does stick to more traditional sounding music, whereas games I'm more familiar with do not. Halo, Call of Duty, The Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, Metro 2033, Portal, all have very different music. I can play three video game songs; Siege of Madrigal (from Halo), Still Alive (from Portal), and Mario (I've still gotta work on this one a bit).
