We cross our bridges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that once our eyes watered.
- T. Stoppard

The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word 'crisis.' One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger - but recognize the opportunity.

hmmmmm...so what you're saying is presumptive opportunism is the way to go?

Oh, these were just two quotes that kinda hit me as I was musing about all of the changes of the last year. In case the news hasn't gotten all the way around yet, I'm no longer engaged, but I'm still here working in VA. My PhD apps are under full sail, with Chicago, New York, and Belfast being the top three contestants. There have been some difficult choices and surprising opportunities in my path, and I'm forging ahead with faith in God's plan!

Wow! I hope all goes well for you. It sounds like that though you have faced a disappointment, an adventure is ahead. You don't seem to check Pleonast often, but I enjoy when you write something. Take care! At least let us know your decision!

Perhaps.

It is better to have a permanent income than to be fascinating.

...but I'm not completely convinced. Film musicology PhD applications, here I come!

Well, a nanny+personal assistant+housekeeper... I started this past Monday. It's hard work, but satisfying in a instant gratification kind of way.

One week from today, God willing, I will receive that singularly overpriced piece of faux parchment proclaiming me to be a Master of the Arts.

Which "arts" is really anybody's guess.

I prefer it that way.
