Apples!!!!!
Bobby and I love applesauce. This week we froze 41 quarts of it and I made, of all things, an applesauce cake. MMMMMMM! The recipe was my grandmother's--that makes it even better.
I lived in California for part of my growing up time. (Some time was in Oregon.) When Mom and Dad built a house in Santa Rosa it was in the middle of an apple orchard. I loved the Gravenstein apples when the were still very green. My dad sure could make a great apple pie! He was the baker in the family.
Dad being the baker reminds me of a very interesting time for him. During WWII, he was a baker on a ship. Later he changed assingments and ships and was doing other tasks. Once when that ship was headed into port in the Phillipines to resupply, they were diverted before they arrived and sent to sarch for Amelia Erhart. Since they had not picked up supplies they soon ran out of all bread, crackers, etc. This ship did not have a baker on board. Imagine a shipload of men and no bread!!!! After one of his shifts Dad went to the kitchen and requested permission to cook a little something. They said OK but be sure to clean up after himself! He make bread for the men on his mess. Soon the smell of bread permiated the ship and the captain came in and wanted to know who had been in the kitchen. The rest of the search Dad spent baking. He and his assistants were instructed not to lift a finger to clean up! He made bread, cakes, biscuits, cookies, etc. He sure was a popular sailor!!!!!

He looks big until you realize how small that remote is that he's holding.
