Sunday Lunch

We were very blessed to have a great group of young people over for lunch today. The "Lunchees" were: Katie and Tim, Megan and Adam, Tim, Kelly,Chris H.,and Zach Couchman and company.
On the menu for those interested ( Hi Ben) : Barbara Qualls chicken and rice, Barbara Qualls frozen cranberry salad and Barbara Qualls always serves green peas, salad and rolls with that meal, so I do too! For dessert, we had cheesecake from Chigago ( thank you Compton family!) and Libba's award winning Rocky Mountain Pie.
The Tampa Bay football team, that pirate name, is on and itis a cozy day to relax before returning to hear another good talk from Mr. Harrell ( sorry if I misspelled that, hey, is there a spell check for pleonast? I know it won't correct names but that made me think of that)
Have a good week to all it may concern!

If you use the Google Toolbar, it has a built-in spelling checker. If you don't use it, you should, because it simplifies many aspects of searching.

Thoughts or Comments?

Here is a quote. I don't know the source unfortunately.
"Education is not the filling of a bucket
but the lighting of a fire"
How much of the schooling or learning do we do or impose on our children that is stuffing ourselves or them full of facts that are mostly here today and gone today? Are we enriching our lives or merely putting in a lot of mostly trivial "stuff" that will not help us glorify God or spark a love of some subject that we could actually use? Just a thought. I am always pondering this but have never come to a good conclusion. I know we are expected to learn the multiplication table and it is good to know the state capitals and what is an adverb and so on and so on. I have a hard time making sense of the educational system that our culture puts so much stock in.

I agree. I think that too often we assume that facts and information are what make up knowledge. A person with knowledge but without the wisdom to know what to do with that knowledge won't go very far.

“Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime” - this oldie but goodie pretty much says the same thing. I think it's true - it's definitely the law school approach to education. It's impossible to learn all there is in the law about anything - you have to learn how to get the information you need. If you have the tools and you have a passion to learn, you will go a lot further than if you just try to memorize more stuff.

Think Fall

That is what we are doing at our house. Think lots of maple leafy garlands, assorted pumkins and lots of cute crafty autumn things. Step outside and it is perpetual summerland. Back in and ahhhhh it is Fall. To quote from a neat poem that harkens me back to my little ones around me all cozy and sweet and the so clean and crisp air that made you understand more of how great God is...
"When the frost is on the punkin
and the fodders in the shock...
Oh, it's then the time a feller
is a-feelin at his best
With the risin' sun to greet him
from a night of peaceful rest
As he leaves his house bareheaded
and goes out to feed the stock...
But the air's so appetizin'
and the landscape through the haze
Of a crisp and sunny morning
of the airly autumn haze
Is a pictur' that no painter
has the colorin' to mock
When the frost is on the punkin
and the fodders in the shock." James Whitcomb Riley

Fall is my favorite season, we get it in about November in Florida ;-) To help me adjust to autumn in Florida I keep an eye on the cypress trees as I passed over the Hillsborough River every day or two. They actually turn in the fall and then come out all bright green in the spring.

The Real First Post

Hello out there in computer land. Here I am. I may not ever do this again or then again I may be on here all the time. I hope not to run the young people off by being here but I do like to write so.... Maybe I will do one of those "expose myself" posts and tell everyone all they ever didn't want to know about me. I will think about that. For now, my youngest duckling wants the computer so I will go do my happy housewifely duties. For supper, FOR your FYI is roast with carrots, onions, potatoes and the secret gravy ingredient of course. Fried okra and rolls too!
Love,
me
  • colorado_girl
I know whats in the gravy! Yeah i am glad and a little disturbed that you are on here, just don't lecture me to long about any of mu posts.

Since when is that ingredient a secret? It's not like it's that hard to figure out if you know our family very well.

Hey, welcome to Pleonast. This is Joel from "The Christians that Meet in a Huge Building." Dinner sounds great! That secret gravy ingredient, is it by any chance manufactured by the Soylent Corporation?
