Our baby is 1!

Happy Birthday to Claire! Wow! What a fun year we have had! Thank to everyone who has prayed for and encouraged and supported us through our first year of parenting. We're going to need more! :)

A new year (warning: long!) :)

2009 came faster than I thought it would at this time last year! We've had a very fun and eventful year and we can't believe that we're planning Claire's first birthday party already. We also can't believe that she still doesn't have any teeth! haha We're also getting much more exercise than we were at this time last year since I was over 7 months pregnant and Matthew had just had knee surgery. We finished our fall league softball in November and we're enjoying playing basketball in separate mens and womens leagues. So far our womens team has lost every game, but we're improving! We're very blessed to have Christian friends to spend time with for recreational activities.

Well Claire has learned to pull up and stand without help, but not quite walking yet. No hurry though, because she is a lot easier to catch crawling! :) She has also learned to "dance" (more like bouncing and bobbing her head) and give fives. Unfortunately(or fortunately depending on how you look at it...) she gets spats for doing things when we tell her no, but she hasn't been too stubborn so far! :) She is also really enjoys helping with the laundry...(these are work socks, not good socks and that's why they look bad)

Matthew and I have been in young adult bible class studying service this quarter and we've really enjoyed and been encouraged by everyone in the class! I thought I would share a good but not exhaustive list that we put together of some ways to serve others... (Let me know which one/ones you like!)

1. At a drive thru, pay for your lunch and also the person behind you.
2. Recycle.
3. Crochet, knit, sew, or buy needed items for the elderly, sick, or anyone who may need cheering up. (winter hats, wheelchair/walker bags, pillow cases, etc)
4. Pick up litter. Litter isn’t just on the side of the road.
5. Visit elderly, especially in the winter when the weather keeps us indoors.
6. Give someone else your seat in a crowded waiting room, on a bus, etc.
7. Pick up items that babies/mommies drop.
8. Write a letter to a soldier overseas. This website is useful to send letters or care packages to soldiers who do not get much or any mail from home. Details can be found here: http://www.anysoldier.com/
9. Bake cookies for your coworkers.
10. Become a big brother or big sister in your community.
11. Volunteer at a crisis help line.
12. Learn for free rice. This website is sponsored by various organizations and for every question you answer correctly; they will donate 20 grains of rice. They also give a video of rice donation and you can answer questions about different subjects. http://freerice.com/
13. Smile at people you pass by.
14. Bring a friend one of their favorite foods, drinks, etc. to show that you were thinking of them.
15. Visit sick. You can even ask who needs a visit or rarely gets visits at rehabilitation centers and similar places where people maybe need cheering up.
16. Make or take items to new mommies at the hospital. (burp cloths, socks, hats, etc.)
17. Take food (bought or made) to the family of someone you know in the hospital. They may have to stay close by for a while or be too tired to get their own. However, strangers may be hesitant to take food from people they do not know.
18. Send letters and care packages to orphans. This website seems legitimate and even gives photo feedback when you sponsor an orphan and send him/her a package. http://www.life2orphans.org/
19. Be an organ donor.
20. Mow someone’s yard for them. This can also be an anonymous service.
21. Give blood and/or plasma.
22. Share books with random people. You can buy one or a few books and send them to random addresses across the U.S. Include a note to explain that this is a random act of kindness to be read and enjoyed and then anonymously mailed on to someone else. No names or return addresses included, but you can write your state in the cover and request the next recipients do the same.
23. Buy some school supplies at the beginning of the school year and carry them to a school office to be given to students whose families cannot buy their own.
24. At restaurants or places with comment cards, leave good feedback when possible. This is especially helpful if you can leave the name of a helpful employee as well.
25. At a toll booth, pay the toll for the person behind you.
26. Give a ride to someone who can’t drive. They may need a ride to the doctor, grocery store, etc.
27. Donate children’s books to Bagong Kulturang Pinoy to help support literacy in poverty stricken areas of the Phillippines. For more information, go to http://www.aklatan.org/index1.html
28. Visit at lunch time at your local senior center.
29. Send someone a card.
30. Let someone out in front of you in traffic.
31. 31. Send food/clothes/money to needy Christians anywhere in the world.
32. Send a one-time gift to a preacher anywhere in the world who is struggling to pay his bills.
33. Give away things you don’t need but are in good shape to needy families you know or post on Freecycle.com.
34. Send thank-you cards to just about anyone, thanking them for touching your life even in the smallest of ways.
35. When you hear someone has a real interest in something, buy them a small gift relating to that interest. For example, if they love fishing and you see a book on fishing at a garage sale for $0.50, buy it and give it to them. If they throw it away, you’ve only lost 50 cents!

We are hoping to visit AU soon and see everyone again! We miss you and look forward to seeing you soon! May God bless you til we meet again! :)

9 Month Portraits!

Yes... It's already been 9 months! She is lots of fun to play with now. I try to put sentimental or favorite things in the pictures with her. The stuffed tiger was Matthew's that his grandmother gave him when he was little. We brought her the stuffed potato from Idaho while we were on our trip last month and she has played with it a lot. We're looking forward to Claire's first holidays. Hope you have a great day!

I love English...

The 25 Funniest Analogies (Collected by High School English Teachers)

1. Her face was a perfect oval, like a circle that had its two sides gently compressed by a ThighMaster.

2. His thoughts tumbled in his head, making and breaking alliances like underpants in a dryer without Cling Free.

3. He spoke with the wisdom that can only come from experience, like a guy who went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the country speaking at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.

4. She grew on him like she was a colony of E. Coli, and he was room-temperature Canadian beef.

5. She had a deep, throaty, genuine laugh, like that sound a dog makes just before it throws up.

6. Her vocabulary was as bad as, like, whatever.

7. He was as tall as a six-foot, three-inch tree.

8. The revelation that his marriage of 30 years had disintegrated because of his wife’s infidelity came as a rude shock, like a surcharge at a formerly surcharge-free ATM machine.

9. The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn’t.

10. McBride fell 12 stories, hitting the pavement like a Hefty bag filled with vegetable soup.

11. From the attic came an unearthly howl. The whole scene had an eerie, surreal quality, like when you’re on vacation in another city and Jeopardy comes on at 7:00 p.m. instead of 7:30.

12. Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze.

13. The hailstones leaped from the pavement, just like maggots when you fry them in hot grease.

14. Long separated by cruel fate, the star-crossed lovers raced across the grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having left Cleveland at 6:36 p.m. traveling at 55 mph, the other from Topeka at 4:19 p.m. at a speed of 35 mph.

15. They lived in a typical suburban neighborhood with picket fences that resembled Nancy Kerrigan’s teeth.

16. John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had also never met.

17. He fell for her like his heart was a mob informant, and she was the East River.

18. Even in his last years, Granddad had a mind like a steel trap, only one that had been left out so long it had rusted shut.

19. Shots rang out, as shots are wont to do.

20. The plan was simple, like my brother-in-law Phil. But unlike Phil, this plan just might work.

21. The young fighter had a hungry look, the kind you get from not eating for a while.

22. He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck, either, but a real duck that was actually lame, maybe from stepping on a land mine or something.

23. The ballerina rose gracefully en Pointe and extended one slender leg behind her, like a dog at a fire hydrant.

24. It was an American tradition, like fathers chasing kids around with power tools.

25. He was deeply in love. When she spoke, he thought he heard bells, as if she were a garbage truck backing up.
