Ideas for how to study the Old Testment...

So...I am looking for ideas of the "best" way to go about studying the Old Testament. I feel like I have started to read it a hundred times and then get lost in the genealogies...and end up back in the New Testament (where I don't feel so lost). I am a very "chronological" person...so reading it from Genesis to Malachi has not been a great way for me to try and study. What are some ways that have worked for you? What version do you use? Any aids or helps??
thanks

Well, there is a chronological Bible out there. I'm not sure the name of it, but I'm sure it'd be easy to find.

This one is the first I saw when I googled it. I haven't seen it personally. It's a New King James translation.

Have you seen the Waldron's book that divides the bible up into 17 time periods? The time periods are a chronological "skeleton" so to speak, then you fill in the skeleton with the bible stories that fit into each time period. I love this approach, as it helps with learning the bible as one big story, and thus helps to retain each new part learned, for it is connected to the things before and after. For whatever reason, I can't think of the name of the book, but if you don't have it and you'd like it, I'll be glad to find my copy and let you know.

^^^That's my favorite. Here it is.... It is only $2.50 and is a 'way' of studying...just a short book. I've used it myself and with virtually every age I can think of. I cannot say enough about it. I LOVE it. It is called 3 Cycle Approach.

I use the daily bible. It has you go through the bible in a year. I got a really cheap one for about $5--I think. Since I have other Bibles I didn't see the point of getting one of the more expensive ones, and it has served it purpose the two years I've had it!

Thanks everyone! I thought you were talking about the "other" Waldron book Cara (The History and Geography of the Bible Story). Crazy me...I should have asked...oh well. I have a few different suggestions that I might try! Thanks

This is Katie hijacking Laura's blog to post pictures of Luke because she thinks it a pain to post pictures but I think everyone needs a chance to see the absolute cuteness of my nephew Luke. You see his pictures make me smile and I am sure it will do the same for you.

First this has got to be the biggest hamming picture I have seen of him. What a doll!

"But I just wanted to pull your tail and chew on your ears Shelly." Luke has started to low crawl. I think Shelly is concerned.

Look at that form. His daddy has started him doing push-ups.

Now this is a post from a completely unbiased aunt. Hope you enjoy!

Every day...possibly more

So, I have come up w/ something that I am going to try! I don't know about you...but I feel like my list of faults/shortcomings is pretty long and sometimes it feels very overwhelming to try and work on everything at the same time. So, I have decided to be more focused in my approach. Each day I am going to pick something to work/focus on to make myself a better person, wife, mother, daughter, friend, and most importantly...a servant of God.

Today...my goal is to be more positive! It's too easy to caught up in the "negativity" of this world/life. I am going to focus on being a more positive! Look for the good in every situation...think the best in someone instead of the worst...give compliments instead of criticism...build up instead of tear down!! (I think you get the idea.)

At first...I thought...each day I will work on something new...well, I'll have to see how each "task" goes. If I feel like I'm doing good...and making progress...then I will move on. If not...I will continue w/ that "task" until I feel that it's time to add something else into the mix! Maybe I should have "weekly goals"...oh well, this is new...so, I will just tweek it as I go.

So for today (and possibly longer...) it's "Positive Polly"!!!

I am definitely going to look into that book. I love to read devotionals and studies on my own. Have you read anything by Elizabeth George? She is really good. I especially liked A Woman After God's Own Heart and my favorite was Loving God With All Your Mind. The last one did so much for my faith.

Your goals sound good--I would think weekly goals would be the best.

Good idea, Laura! There are so many things that I need to work on as well, and maybe your "one thing at a time" approach will also work better for me. Now, I just need to decide which one first...

Happenings...

Briefly...

Luke...
-being treated for GERD (basically reflux)...he seems to be responding pretty well
-he's got two teeth (the bottom ones)
-getting quite the personality!! :) Quite funny at times...
-finally feeling better after having Strep throat...still not sure how he got that!

Rob is doing well...
-Getting ready for another 9 weeks training (fun fun), at least he will be in the area though!
-Will probably be deploying towards the end of this year...

As for me...
-Teaching a Bible class on base (w/ a group that is made up of women of various faiths)...very interesting! I have met some AMAZING women.
-Adjusting to "mommyhood"...been a lot harder than I ever imagined...
-Really looking forward to warmer days!! I miss the beach...and can't wait to take Luke!

Overall...
-doing good
-blessed beyond measure

It's good to be back! Andy and I are just studying a book on our own and doing our own research--no materials. We both do a lot of cross referencing to understand better. We are doing one minor prophet a week-discuss on Tuesday evening after girls in bed. Last week I was out so we actually didn't start the study until about 10! We have casually looked at things scripturally over the years, and even tried to do early morning devo's together, but this is actually the first time that we have made a schedule and stuck with it. This just works for us. We both say we should have started sooner though.

I just briefly read some of your past struggles with Luke on the crunchy moms group. I feel terrible for you because I know exactly what you are going through. Audrey was the easiest child on the planet which is why I was so ready for number 2. Emmie on the other hand was a completely different story. She screamed LOUD from the minute she was born. Even the nurses in the hospital would leave the room because of her cry. She had hip dysplasia, gerd, and a milk allergy. It was a really really rough several months. I do believe that all of the screaming and sleep deprivation led to my ppd problems. I will tell you that it does get better. I am so thankful for the medication and that it seems to be helping Luke. Emmie outgrew all of her problems by the age of one and while she still has a very loud cry she doesn't have any issues with gerd or milk:) I do remember the hard times with her, but she is such a sweet girl now that it doesn't seem like she could have possibly ever been that stinky--she wasn't stinky, but sick. Once we got her all straightened out we were able to really see who she was and that is a precious gift. We got glimpses of it at first, but now we get to see it all the time! I am just now really feeling ready to have another baby. Em will be well over 3 by that time and with Audrey she wasn't even 2 before being a big sister. Let me know if you have any questions. I love you and am so happy to be catching up with you!
