update

#1: its freezing, went from daffodils and wild flowers to snow flurries some hail in between. the heat is already truned off for the year in my studio, its 50 degrees in my studio- not good when your hands are wet 80% of the time and clay gets really stiff when cold.

#2: my dog has been eating cat poop. straight out of the litter box, while i'm gone or asleep- this could piss off the cat who will piss on my things. there is a bit of a situation. Last time i had a situation with the dog and the kitchen trash can, I chased her with the trash can while banging it, making it like agiant monster that could eat her. havent figured out how to do this with a cat box....

#3: I'm really homesick, want to see my family and that sucks.

#4: Found out that next year i will probally get to share my studio space with the one grad student in our program i strongly and enormously dislik. he has anger mangement issues and yells at people. And he doesnt like people going into his space, yethis space will now have the sink in it and i will have to use the sink many times in one day. hmmmm...yeah....not so good

#5 Watched "Stranger than Fiction" and absolutely loved it, wish i was a cool graphic designer (i think deep down i am one) and the last narration in the movie rocked. its is totally why i make art and make pots. the small mundane comforting moments in life are what keeps us afloat.

back to work.....

p.s.- pics of work in the previous bloggers

spring fever

ahhhh... its is finally spring
I love spring,
I now can ride i to work because it stays light outside,
I can ride my bike and not freeze,
i get to take my allergy meds,
the red bud trees have been incredible this year- we havent had a horrible storm yet to knock all the flowers off,

I took the dog hiking and she actually runs into the water and lays down. she has come a long way and her swimming is so much better- she wasnt very good in the begining ,it was funny and a little scary, but still more funny.

we found daffodils yellow and white growing on top of this hill, blue bells, blue phrox, white daisy looking things(maybe red root something), and little pick flowers.

and best of all my dog is no longer terified of my camera (after i figured out how to turn off all beeping sounds)

if only i could focus on working on writing my paper.. I rally really hate papers, dont mind the research- does the world really need more poorly written papers- i wish i could turn in artwork, writing is so over rated...... bleh

birds that eat dead stuff

I went hiking on Sunday to a really beautiful spot called Panther's Den. It is this slot canyon with these incredible rock formations, it feel like an ancient castle. While we were there we found a vultures nest with eggs. A couple days ago i was watching a nature show about animals and it showed some ultures and other birds that eat dead animals.

thought: why do all such birds who eat dead carion look like rotten flesh? is it a requirment? does it stain ones feather? maybe they just want to look ominous.

I also slept for a whole day and feel much better.
Seriously can someone please explain to me how to post a picture.

hmmmmm... a moral act for one's family? if you want to touch on the formation of moral judgments and their cultural concommitants I would really recommend the work of jonathan haidt... his foundation work is this http://faculty.virginia.edu/haidtlab/articles/haidt.emotionaldog.pdf , but i would recommend his work on the "five foundations of moralality" http://faculty.virginia.edu/haidtlab/articles/haidt.joseph.2007.the-moral-mind.doc , http://faculty.virginia.edu/haidtlab/articles/haidt.graham.when-morality-opposes-justice.doc ; there is actually a better article, but I can't get his website to link it up

basically haidt argues that ethical imperatives center around 5 culturally variable themes: harm, reciprocity, authority, ingroup, and divinity--- essentially our culture ( and our internal temperamental attributes) aids us in linking up these themes to emotional reactions that appear in our minds as intuitive judgments of right and wrong-- victorian culture was largely very ingroup (e.g. concern for the family), authoritarian (e.g. patriarchical), and divinity (e.g. high concern over moral purity) centered -- there was less concern over justice (e.g. as evidenced by widespread inequality and acceptance of priviledge), harm appears to be a universal (e.g. less culturally variable) concern

  • badgah
a consideration for your paper might be to approach the attitude that artictic decoration "should" occur in one's living space is a victorian moral imperative that is out of step with our culture; you could possibly tie this to the reality that living environments actually do reflect individual variation, despite whether "art" per se is present or not-- individuals that do choose a higher level of aesthetic concern have shaped their environment to the same extent as the person whose house has nothing in it or is living in a total dump

mckib-- the five factor model of personality has found the widest support cross-culturally.... additionally the book "blink" by malcolm gladwell discusses a study done by gosling that looks at how the personality of a complete stranger can be accurately ascertained by just a few minute in their living space.... the original paper is at this site http://www.nichols.edu/faculty/Mcgovern/PSY308/Readings/Roomwithacue.pdf .... i would definitely recommend reading the introduction and the conclusion section, but the design and results section is a little tedious
    by badgah at 03/21/07 9:21AM
  • badgah
in the end what i know of temperament and personality research overall indicates that people do arrange their environments to suit their personalities, including the artwork that is chosen... in the end to argue that people shouldn't do that would be to argue that people should not do something that nature (both internal characteristics of the individual and their external environment) has formed them to do in the first place
    by badgah at 03/21/07 9:27AM
  • badgah
i would get on your school article search (EBSCO?) and look around for a good, non-technical, review of the the five factor model of personality... maybe in "Annual Review of Psychology" or "Journal of Personality and Social Psychology"... also the psychologist David Buss has some interesting work that you migh want to check out

Miranda interviewing Kelly

Questions:

1) What's you favorite piece you've ever made (paint or ceramic)?
usually its whatever i've finished recently becasue i'm alwyas pushing myself and if it works then thats what i like the most at the time. in ceramics i really cant pick one, becuase i'm still learning am not wuite to liking things i do yet. close but not there yet.

my favorite non-ceramic piece is a drawing project i did in undergrad of the steps of a sheep being sheared. I took a diagram drawing from a sheep textbook of the steps, enlarged them , tranfered them to large pices of drawing paper, and then painted gold halos behind the sheeps head. its a representation of Isiah 53. I've moved it with me now to three states, i cant afford to frame it (its 9 large drawings), and I dont know where i would hang it. i've never had the chance to display and i dont know if i'll ever get too.

2) Would you ever work a desk job? Why or why not.
No. I become very irritable and unhappy very quickly if i am not
making things with my hands, being creative and usually moving around. I like computers but i have a limit of how much i can stand to use them in a session, it's usually about 2 hours then i have to do something else.

3) When you think about freedom, what's the first thing that comes to mind?
right now financial- maybe b/c i'm in grad school and look forward to student loans.
Otherwise- freedom to me means the right and ability to think, question everything, and choose for yourself how to live.

4) Name your top five albums to be stuck on a desert island with.
The Shins "Chutes to Narrow"
The Amelie Movie Soundtrack
Gillian Welch "Soul Journey"
The Decembrists "Her Majesty"
The Flashdance Movie Soundtrack- becuase i would be able to dance like no one is watching since i'd be on an deserted island.

5) If you had to be an animal, what would you be?
a dolphin, i think doing those flips would be lots of fun, they are really playful, legends says they have psychic poewrs, and other reasons i saw on the discovery channel special ;)

How to play:
1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
2. I respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. You will update your blog with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.
