05/01/09 8:25AM

So tomorrow is the big day and there are a ton of things to do and not enough hours in the day to do it.

I still need to:

Pack

Wash dishes

Fold Clothes

Get a Haircut

Burn a DVD

Help set up Chairs

Go to Rehearsal Dinner

Play Golf with my Groomsmen

It wouldn't be so bad, except that it's a little over an hour from the apartment to where the rehearsal/wedding will be.

Comfort?

My grandfather was 92 years old when he passed away last Sunday morning. My family came in and it was great to see them, but overshadowing all of that is that my grandfather was not a member of the church. My dad, uncle and their families are the only ones who are members of the church in the Price family. So while the rest of the family, friends and the Methodist "pastors" were saying he is in a better place, I am thinking to myself "no he isn't". At this point I know some of you may say we can't make that judgment call, but we can make a pretty good guess based on scripture.

My grandparents have not been in good health for several years now and we all knew this was coming, but we didn't know how soon it would come. It's not like we weren't preparing for this to happen. When it does happen though, it hits pretty hard. Knowing that there's nothing else you can do and knowing that after years and years of trying you were never able to get through. They made the decision to not listen a long time ago and stuck to it.

So I ask now, what comfort is there for the Christian who loses a family member that is not one?

Be thankful that your grandparents never stood in the way of your dad and Uncle Joe becoming Christians. In HS it would have been hard for them if your grandparents hadn't given them the free will of choice. Remember the good times and pray for the Lord's help during this time. I'm praying for you and the family. How is your grandma?

The mercy of God that we cannot understand. Mom mentioned this to me the other day and it helped. Ken's grandmother just passed away after years of refusing to hear the Word. We are very saddened by her sudden death, but I do take comfort in the mercy of God. His will be done.

Four years ago, my grandfather, who was a Methodist, passed away. I had the exact same thoughts as you did during the funeral. I cringed every time the pastor said "he's in a better place." When my family stepped outside of the meeting house, there was an elder and his wife from Cy-Fair who had driven 6 hours just to be there at the funeral of someone they didn't know, someone who was related to people they DID know and cared very much about. There are very few times in my adult life when I have clung to someone in tears, but that was one of them. They understood. They knew. I lost a grandfather, but my eyes were opened to the many more fathers and grandfathers that I gained in Christ. Mt. 19:29 "And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name's sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life."

Comfort in the death of my grandfather? There was none. The comfort came with growing closer to God's family, even as I drifted farther from the parts of my physical family that were not Christians.

I think it was that moment that I made the decision to become a preacher. My thoughts went like this, "This terrible thing has happened to my family. I'm going to do everything I can so that others don't have to endure this loss." Take comfort from God's family. Take away resolve to change those who you can change.
