In everything give thanks...

Just sharing thoughts I have recently had. In the midst of concerning news about many of my friends with health problems, many quite severe, and the way our own home often seems like an ambulatory care center, I have just been thinking about how much I have to be thankful for.

When I go to the kitchen and open the cupboards, there is food.
When I turn on the kitchen faucet, there is water.
When I flip the switch, there is electricity. (Most of time - summer in Alabama = thunderstorms and downed power lines.)
When I want to take a shower, the water is hot and I have soap.
When it gets dark, I have a bed. I am sleeping inside a house. No one is trying to harm me.
When I need groceries, I have a car that runs and the ability to drive to the store.
I know where my children and my husband are, and (mostly) what they are doing.
For the moment, our jobs are stable.
In my whole life, I have never been unaware of who God is.
I have always owned a Bible.
People who I don't even know love me because we are Christians.
When I am at worship, at the very same time, angels are praising the same God around His throne.
When Jesus was crucified, I was spared the death sentence I deserved for my sins.

If I kept working on this list, the world could not contain the books.

To look at that list and then grumble would truly be to show ungratefulness to God.

Let me invite you to make your own list and keep adding to it. Nothing is too small to include. You will never have any trouble praying if you consult your list and consider the alternative.

Since this is my first post since February, I might be gone again for a while. Thanks for checking in.

Now appearing...

Spending more time these days on Facebook than Pleonast. If anyone is trying to get my attention, try me there. Or you could just go old school and call me.

Culled!

I frequently say that I post on pleonast every 2 years whether I need to or not. Just now I was lurking around and realized that my very ancient post has apparently been archived, so I am adding this to keep the page from looking so empty.

Nobody ever comes here, anyway. I could put the following statement:

"Let's mumble dogfish to the banana patch."

and not one person would post back to say "Huh?".

I'll be back when I have something to say and time to type it.

Do unto others

Just thinking about the words of Jesus: "And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise." Luke 6:31 NKJV

This command lies at the heart of seeking the benefit of others before yourself. How hard it is sometimes to take myself out of the limelight and look for opportunities to serve others!

So I'm asking myself -

Do I want others to pray for me? Then I should be praying for others.

Do I want others to encourage me when I am feeling too weak to fight Satan? Then I should be there for Christians who are facing persecution.

Do I want to hear "you can do it" when I am trying to get the nerve to tackle something I have never tried before? Then I should offer honest, edifying words to those who are stepping out of the back row to be leaders of a new generation of Christians.

When I am afraid for my brother because he seems to be following a path of sin, do I want him to listen openly when I come to him with my concerns? Then I should be willing to hear my brother without being insulted.

Do I want others to come to me in genuine concern for my soul when I have sinned? (Tell the truth, now.) Then, as hard as it may be, it looks like I should approach another Christian with an open Bible and an humble spirit. (2 Tim. 2:25-26)

How many times have you heard this announcement? "We only want to follow the Bible in our worship. If you see or hear anything in our services that you do not find in the Bible, we would count you our friend if you would show it to us, so that we can please God." Do we only say that because we don't ever expect anyone to really do it? Would you count someone your friend who showed you from the Bible that you might be wrong?

Jesus always did for others what was best for them. Not everyone appreciated it. It was still the right thing to do.

By the way, noting that camp is near and dear to the hearts of many of you, let me add that my heart was made glad by the unselfishness some of you showed by giving up something to make sure that others were able to attend camp. You know who you are. The joy of giving guarantees that you will keep on doing it.

RYC Hangover

First camp was great, but now I have that camp hangover - you know, adjusting to air conditioning, getting enough sleep, walking less than 10 miles a day.... I am inviting any campers or counselors from RYC to share their favorite moments of the week. However, random thoughts are also welcome!
  • vickigo
Amen, I don't quite ever get over it. In a lot of ways, that is a good thing!

Hey Mrs. Jane. I had a great time at RYC again this year. Well, there were soo many moments... Let's see... How about while doing a craft one little girl says "i don't want to touch that is it poop?" We were covering a can will brown shoe polish! Anyway that was a moment that will stick. Another favorite is all the singing and devoting time to prayer and bible that I know my children will remember for the rest of their lives. Those are my favorite moments!
