The Way of the Righteous and the End of the Ungodly
15th Street Church of Christ
July 22, 2007
Jordan Kelley
I. Intro.
A. Good Morning
1. It’s good to see everyone this morning
2. If you would, turn your Bibles to Psalms 1. I will be reading there shortly
B. Just to fill everyone in, that does not know already. Today I will be preaching and next Sunday, Keith will come over from Lubbock and will be preaching on the 5th Sunday.
1. I was going to preach next week but then we found away that Keith and I both can get up here and preach
C. My Sermon today is going to mainly about the first Psalm and about the Way of the Righteous and the End of the Ungodly.
D. Lets read the first Psalm so we can get a background real quick.
1. Ps 1
Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so,
But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the ungodly shall perish.
II. Psalms 1:1
A. Now lets look at some of the words so we can know what they mean and how they apply to todays sermon.
1. Blessed- Strong says that blessed comes from the Hebrew word esher meaning happy
2. Walk- comes from the Hebrew word haw-lak’ meaning to walk, as in
to walk (in a great variety of applications, literally and figuratively): - (all) along, apace, behave , come, continually, be conversant, depart, + be eased, enter, to exercise oneself, + follow, forth, forward, get, go , + greater, grow, be wont to haunt, lead, march,... and so on
3. Counsel- comes from the Hebrew word ay-staw’ meaning
advice; by implication plan; also prudence: - advice, advisement, counsel ([-lor]), purpose.
4. ungodly- comes from the Hebrew word raw-shaw’ meaning
morally wrong; concretely an (actively) bad person: - + condemned, guilty, ungodly, wicked (man), that did wrong.
5. sinners- comes from the Hebrew word khat-taw' meaning
a criminal, or one accounted guilty: - offender, sinful, sinner.
6. seat- comes from Hebrew word mo-shawb' meaning
a seat; figuratively a site; abstractly a session; by extension an abode (the place or the time); by implication population: - assembly, dwell in, dwelling (-place), wherein (that) dwelt (in), inhabited place, seat, sitting, situation, sojourning.
7. scornful- comes from the Hebrew word loots meaning a teacher
8. So Psalms 1:1 literally translated would read;
How Happy! is the man
Who exercises oneself not in the advice of the condemned,
Nor remains in the life of a criminal,
Nor remains in the dwelling of the teacher;
a. Isn’t that true? Aren’t people happy, both physically and spiritually, if they do nnot exercise oneself in the advice of the condemned, or lives a life of a criminal, or dwells at a teachers house that practises such things?
1. of course! we find this in the Beatitudes in Matt. 5
aa. Matt 5:3-12
3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
For they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
For they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
For they shall be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 "Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
bb. Here we see practicly the same thing as what Psalms 1 has said.
III. Psalms 1:2
A. Now lets look at the second verse
1. which says
But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
a. Lets look at the word meditate and what it means
1. in Hebrew it means an implication to pounder or murmur but I think that Webster says it perfectly; to engage in mental exercise (as concentration on one's breathing or repetition of a mantra) for the purpose of reaching a heightened level of spiritual awareness
b. The word meditate is used 18 times in the whole Bible in the NKJV
c. here are some examples
1. Josh 1:8
8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
2. Ps 4:4
Be angry, and do not sin.
Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still.
3. Ps 77:6
6 I call to remembrance my song in the night;
I meditate within my heart,
And my spirit makes diligent search.
4. Ps 119:15
15 I will meditate on Your precepts,
And contemplate Your ways.
5. Mal 3:16
hen those who feared the LORD spoke to one another,
And the LORD listened and heard them;
So a book of remembrance was written before Him
For those who fear the LORD
And who meditate on His name.
6. Phil 4:8-9
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy — meditate on these things. 9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.
7. 1 Tim 4:12-16
Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. 15 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. 16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
c. As we can see, we need to meditate on the Bible both day and night because God said so, for one, and two, because as we jst read, Paul said, “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity”
IV. Psalms 1:3
A. Now lets look at the 3rd verse
1. Ps 1:3
He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.
a. when I read this, I remember 3 things
1. the parable of the Talents
2. the wise and foolish men
3. and Solomon
aa. lets look at Matt 25:14-30
"For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. 15 And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. 16 Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. 17 And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. 18 But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord's money. 19 After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.
20 "So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, 'Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.' 21 His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.' 22 He also who had received two talents came and said, 'Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.' 23 His lord said to him,'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'
24 "Then he who had received the one talent came and said, 'Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.'
26 "But his lord answered and said to him, 'You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. 27 So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.
29'For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
NKJV
1. here we can see that we will prosper in any give talent that we are given and we will gain more talents if we try
bb.Now lets look at Matt 7:24-29
"Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
26 "But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall."
28 And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, 29 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
1. We need to be like the wise man and build our house on the rock. Once we do, we can over come anything that comes our way.
cc. And now turn with me to 1 Kings 3:16-28
Now two women who were harlots came to the king, and stood before him. 17 And one woman said, "O my lord, this woman and I dwell in the same house; and I gave birth while she was in the house. 18 Then it happened, the third day after I had given birth, that this woman also gave birth. And we were together; no one was with us in the house, except the two of us in the house. 19 And this woman's son died in the night, because she lay on him. 20 So she arose in the middle of the night and took my son from my side, while your maidservant slept, and laid him in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. 21 And when I rose in the morning to nurse my son, there he was, dead. But when I had examined him in the morning, indeed, he was not my son whom I had borne."
22 Then the other woman said, "No! But the living one is my son, and the dead one is your son."
And the first woman said, "No! But the dead one is your son, and the living one is my son."
Thus they spoke before the king.
23 And the king said, "The one says, 'This is my son, who lives, and your son is the dead one'; and the other says, 'No! But your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.'" 24 Then the king said, "Bring me a sword." So they brought a sword before the king. 25 And the king said, "Divide the living child in two, and give half to one, and half to the other."
26 Then the woman whose son was living spoke to the king, for she yearned with compassion for her son; and she said, "O my lord, give her the living child, and by no means kill him!"
But the other said, "Let him be neither mine nor yours, but divide him."
27 So the king answered and said, "Give the first woman the living child, and by no means kill him; she is his mother."
28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had rendered; and they feared the king, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to administer justice.
1. we need to pray for wisdom that Solomon had because it is told time and time again in the Proverbs to be liken unto a wise man
V. Psalms 1:4
A. Let’s read the fourth verse of Psalms 1 again
1. Ps 1:4
The ungodly are not so,
But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
a. this is the turning point of my sermon today
1. because at first we have been talking about the Way of the Rightoues but now we are going to talk about the Ungodly
b. the first part of this verse says that the ungodly are not so,
1. are not so to what?
a. to everything that the righteous are
1. so everything that the righteous is, the ungodly is just the opposite... Makes since
c. the second part says; but are like the chaff which the wind drives away
1. if you do not know what a chaff is, it is the stalk that wheat, milo, or any other kind of grain grow on
2. so what he is trying to say is that the wicked don’t care about the word and they just get blown about by others and are happy with it, just like that chaff
a. if we don’t have a good foundation we can be like that also
1. Matt 13:3-9
3 Then He spoke many things to them in parables, saying: "Behold, a sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them. 5 Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. 6 But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away. 7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them. 8 But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9 He who has ears to hear, let him hear!"
VI. Psalms 1:5-6
A. The last two verses in Psalms 1 says
1. Ps 1:5-6
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the ungodly shall perish.
a. We can see this in numerous passages in the New Testament
1. Matt 25:31-46
"When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. 33 And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.'
37 "Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? 39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?' 40 And the King will answer and say to them, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.'
41 "Then He will also say to those on the left hand,'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; 43 I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.'
44 "Then they also will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?' 45 Then He will answer them, saying, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.' 46 And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
2. 2 Tim 4:6-8
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.
VII. Conclusion
A. So in conclusion, which one do you want to be?
1.Do you want to be blessed, and walk not in the path of the Ungodly, delighted and prosper
2. or do you want to be wicked and blown about by the wind and not be with the righteous at judgement?
B. If you are here today, and are Ungodly, and need help this is how you need to go about that.
1. James 5:13-18
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.
C. If you are not yet saved and need to be and have
heard the word
belived the word
have repented of your sins
then all you got to do now is confess
and be baptized and remain faithful
Then come as we stand and sing
