I need some help with a lesson I'm working on. What prevalent phrases do you hear around you that are not based on Scripture? Church of Christers, witnessing for Christ, etc. Psa 19:14; Prov 6:2

"I was raised in the church." Which may have some excuse if you were raised surrounded by a loving group of Christians -- a privilege my children had, as did I. But not as a validation of some sort and certainly not as a scriptural phrase. As I think about it, I think "raised BY the church" might be more accurate, in the sense that it certainly is helpful for parents to have the cooperation of other Christians as they try to raise children!

I can't find "five steps of salvation" or "five acts of worship" in scripture.

I did comment on your FB, and I see "themother" commented on the statement "raised in the church."

    prayer life

Just recently a young man with an otherwise wonderful message used that phrase so many times it drove me to distraction. I don't "have a prayer life"... I pray to God.

Helpmeet. There is no such word. There never was. I guess the concept is sort of based in scripture but usually represents a misconception of what God gave Adam.

^help meet^ (2 separate words) is in Gen. 2:18 in the KJV but not helpmeet (1 word)

I haven't looked it up, but I don't think I've ever found "Guide, guard & direct" in scriptures.

^ I know it's two separate words, one of which is archaic. But many people use it as a word, a label, as in, "He found himself such a good helpmeet."

^^I use the KJV and it definitely uses help meet. I have heard others who dislike the term, but it fits in my opinion. I also use ASV and it uses the word helper. They both mean the same thing to me!

I can't wait to see your lesson! I'm perusing above and seeing some interesting things. I noticed that you asked what was not 'based in scripture' ... not just what terms were not found in scripture.

One thing that drives me crazy is when people use Church of Christ as a an adjective. Another is when they speak of it as a denomination (when referring to groups that are seeking to be non-denominational -- I am fully aware that there are churches who behave like denominations). I often wish that the words or essays speaking of what is wrong in local churches would NOT paint the church that Christ shed His blood for as just another denomination.
