baby's black balloon makes her fly

today i hide from the world
curled up in my bed
watching the afternoon sun creep toward me across the wrinkled sheets.

october has wrapped around my heart
making it just a little harder to breathe

the delicate shimmering threads that connect me to what passes for sanity these days
are taut and humming with strain
as i weight myself down with decisions and bungee off the nearest bridge
hoping that the existential whiplash
won't result in long term damage

some people stress eat
or stress clean
i stress nap

an inventory of my past and current entanglements
indicates that some streamlining is required
if i am to operate at optimal functioning capacity
while a cost benefit analysis
of the effort involved
indicates that a nap is really the best solution

time is a function of forgiveness

The Goo Goos' lyrics say "and you're not thinking about tomorrow", but I bet you are. Sounds like it's time to leave some things in their compartments.

yes. the next to last paragraph is likely why I feel like I am in a coma lately--my body keeps trying to stress nap, and I don't have time for it.

Sadly, I am stress motivated. It is when things get bad that I start moving at top speed. Years of being a professional procrastinator evolved into this sick form of motivating mayehm. I wish I could nap.

I actually tried the V one first... or mixing Vs with Ts. I even looked at V (for Vendetta)'s monologue for inspiration but there just isn't a vast enough vocabulary to voice the variety of verses I'd need to verbalize.

the slightest hint of you brought me down to my knees

i can be blinded by my beliefs
just as easily as my doubts

i was listening to this song on repeat
(his fault)
and i started thinking about how we mix up a little
what we know
with
what we believe about what we know

i feel very strongly sometimes that i "know" God is there and real and present
but what i "know" is really what i choose to believe about what i have felt or experienced

the meaning that i attribute to feelings or experience shapes the way i see the world
which is what we all do
but i think sometimes it's easy for me to forget that there is a step in between
experience and belief
and to take for granted that what happens to me in life means what i have pre-decided that it means

while taking for granted that God is real
and has particular characteristics
and does things a certain way
can help ease me through awkward and difficult times
because my questions only go so deep and then run into the floor of my a priori assumptions

the other side of knowing
is that i can't learn what i already know

my best moments with God
are when i willingly suspend my beliefs
and say,

"hi.
i'm me.
who are you?"

dividing up the country between red and blue

matt posted this on his blog and i swiped it because it cracked me up.

i'm from pittsburgh, pa and i say "pop".

how accurate is this for you?

  • mister_c
yeah that sounds about right. I grew up in Texas. When somebody asked, "Do ya'll have any Coke?" you respond with, "Sure. What kind do you want?"
    by mister_c at 09/14/10 11:29PM
  • donnajo
Yep, Coke says it all. I want to know what that little green county in Alabama calls it. I really should know my counties better and know who those goobs are. Seriously, there are some parts of my beloved state that just isn't ready for the "real" world...

It's interesting the migration from the NE to St Louis that must have occurred, for that one pocket sandwiched between "Coke" and "Pop" to decide to "go for a soda" (Kim Mitchel -- good song -- from Canada -- wonder what THEY call carbonated beverages?)
    by 71lespaulcustom at 09/15/10 12:03AM
  • heatheronthehill
Yep! Having lived in "Coke" land in Texas, "Pop" land in MN, I am now quite comfortable in "Soda" land NJ! :) I always considered "soda" to be a bit of a happy medium!

From Florida and live in Alabama and it's right on both counts. The single green county in Alabama makes me curious too, though. :)

I usually call them by their names, but if I'm being generic I say "soft drink", yet I live in an 80-100% "Coke" zone. If I want cola and I don't know what brand is served, I'll ask for Coke; if that isn't what they serve, they ask 'is Pepsi okay?" so I don't think people assume Coke=any cola.

==edit== They want your hometown, which is only 60 miles from where I live now, but it's a 50-80% Coke zone.

My grandmother said "sodey water"... I guess that's "other".

    It's all coke to me.
Except Mt Dew...that beautiful beverage needs the respect of calling it by it's proper name.

I concur. Having been born in the North, sometimes "pop" slips out and causes a stir in the Land of Coke.

This is interesting! Being a military brat, I've lived in areas of every carbonated beverage nomenclature, but I say "soda" myself. After seeing the map, I guess that must be because my mom and dad are each from separate "soda" areas (CA and MO).

Grew up in MS, lived in Tenn, AL, Ky, and FL. Coke will do for any dark colored drink. Mt. Dew is all it's own.

I'm from KY. Born and raised. Lived here all my life (except for a brief stint in Nashville for about 2 1/2 years). Half the state says "pop", the other half says, "Coke." I say, "soda".

nine

give me your tired,
your poor,
your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
the wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
send these,
the homeless, tempest-tossed
to me,
i lift my lamp beside the golden door!

~ emma lazarus

{inscription on the statue of liberty}

we forget sometimes that this world is not our home
that freedom is not about taxes and property and civil rights
and america is not the golden door

so when we cry out to God,
from hearts covered in blood, and dust and smoke and grit,
"how could you let this happen?"
He gently reminds us
that the freedom to choose means not everyone will make the same choices

the nature of God is revealed in not only what He does
but also in what He doesn't do

He does not force us to love Him, obey Him or choose Him
but He also does not leave us without experiences
to help us make informed decisions
about who we become if we choose fear, hate, and control
over truth, love, and mercy

nine years later
the twin towers point to God with an incredible power
that they never had while they were standing

that i would be good

clarity
is not easily achieved
when one is tired, stressed, dehydrated or hungry

caring for myself has always been my own personal waterloo
and though i pay lip service to its importance
i rarely follow through
preferring instead to gather people around me
who are sufficiently invested in my existence
to care for me

considering the unfolding of a lotus level crazy in my psyche lately
i am surprised at my emotional equanimity
as if my awareness is floating on the surface
of an existential hurricane
in some pocket of serene and peaceful atmosphere
regardless of the massive destruction taking place on the ground below

september brings me:

teal toes
orange eye glitter
gingerbread tea
gummy vitamins for grown ups
elderflower juice boxes
a deeper appreciation for the love of my God
inexpensive items from ikea that make my bedroom pretty
striped socks
more freckles than ever
hope

change is in the air
and change i know and love
it's stability
that i'm trying to learn these days

I think I took a picture of those gummy adult vitamins in Target one day, but I never posted it. Just think of the marketing team that put those together: Hey, just because we're grownups now doesn't mean we can't have fun vitamins. What can we come up with? How about 90210 shaped vitamins? Nah, the guys won't go for it. Maybe some shaped like cars. Nope, the girls won't want them. Maybe some of both in the same jar. Maybe vitamins in a ring pop. But it'd last too long and we'd be sucking on the thing on the way to work in the morning. Hey, wait, we all liked gummies as kids...
