POWER IN THE BLOOD

Baptism washes away sins. It does NOT cure stupid.

    Neither does baptism alone save.

GREEN BEANS

I tried something different this year. I bought a clear sheet of plastic, 10' X 25' and made it a tent with 18" peak over staked out string over a tilled patch in the garden. Under it 8' X 20', I planted 1 row of green beans and 3 rows of corn with 4 tomatoes and 4 bell peppers down the middle. I had trouble with March winds blowing the plastic from the board and brick and block anchors and shoveled dirt on and that held. We had 2 or 3 frosts and the last when the corn was high enough to touch and be burned some through the plastic.

But, my mini greenhouse produced. We had our first green beans last Sunday. Dene microwaves them 6-12 minutes depending in quantity, adds some salt pepper butter sugar and another 4-8 minutes. We like them just barely not crunchy. Do not want them overcooked. I will not pick the first from the regular garden till next weekend. I have silks on the corn while the regular planting has not yet begun to tassel out and may not for several days. The tomatoes and peppers are also ahead, but not sure how much. The cold ground still slows it down some so that the regular planting catches up some.

But, oh, the joy of having fresh green beans 2 weeks or more earlier than normal.

On another note, He showed up in church Sunday. 10 hours of driving for 8 hours with us. What a waste! No time for him to split wood or till the garden or mow the trim or.....

Actually, even this grumpy old man thinks it was very nice and his Mother is still aglow

Last summer I learned the absolutely easiest way to prepare fresh corn on the cob. Put the whole cob in the microwave for 2 minutes. Take it out, cut off about 3/4 inch on the stem end, squeeze out from the other end, and voila! No shucking, no silks, perfect corn! I made the mistake of waiting to try to remove several at once after microwaving them separately, tho, and that doesn't work. You have to cut each out right after microwaving. Try it! You'll like it!

    Enjoy!

How long were we where? I did not understand the question. Unless you meant the party?

Milly's corn "recipe" is the real deal. That's how I started cooking last summer, too!

Fresh green beans from your very own garden this early? What a delight!!

EXCUSES

A good one to get a ZTR--it does not hurt my arthritic hands.

This is true. I do not have to grip. I do not have to be turning the wheel constantly. Instead of aching the night after mowing, there is little to no pain. For RA, pain means damage so that is of no small significance.

Not to mention that it is faster.

But be careful, those fast spinning turns cut divots in the lawn.

And, yes, you freezing Yankees count your blessings, I have already cut the grass twice and at that, I let it go too long. Snow is not all bad.

  • tryphena
Mine has been cut twice--Yankee grass grows fast as well, especially with all the rain we've had. We had a ZTR for a long time, but ended up with a larger regular rider. I miss the ZTR for its speed. We have a hill that I couldn't mow with it without risking life and limb.

I'm near her^, and I just cut mine for the third time -- with my zero radius John Deere, which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! Grass grows crazy fast at 50-60 degrees with plenty of rain. My BIL had to bush hog my field on Sat before I could cut it today, and the part of my yard that I already cut twice was bad, but the part I cut only once before was about 18" high today. Good grief!

I thought I could wait two weeks between cuts. Ain't gonna work. Rain and fertilizer really upset that schedule.

You're not the only one, my back and shoulder lets me know I'm not 21 anymore.

I don't know ... shoveling snow is pretty hard on the old back. :) Take it from one who knows and who will know even better in a few month's time.

I never water or fertilize. Saves the money for both and the money for gas. Seems masochistic to do so.

Fertilizer is for the garden. FOOD!

LAST PHASE

First: You are young and growing and learning

Second: You are working and producing

Third, you retire and then you die.

Friday, 5/10 will be my last work day. I return to check out 6/13. Burning leave time in between. 6/14 is my birthday, my anniversary and now the first day of the rest of my life.

I have little interest in resting. I now have more time to do the work I wish to do.
  • aaronw
Congratulations. Have a happy and fruitful retirement.

So ... it's the end of the rat race. And the beginning of life lived more abundantly, perhaps. :) Congrats on retirement.

Been retired for 7 years and with thanksgiving, enjoyed every day. Hope you will too.

One thing I have enjoyed about retirement is more time for study of the Word, listening to and discussing with other brethren, gaining perspective on what God expects of His people.

^^^Nathan's already been bugging him, with backing from me and Mom. He whines that writing is hard. I think that is the only time he's ever used "hard" as an excuse rather than an incentive. His complaining about how hard it is almost defines irony.

WARFARE

Kindness (brotherly love) AND Hope conquered the Roman Empire (Satan) Not doctrine.

  • iamyourfather
But kindness and hope were the doctrines being taught by the Apostles and prophets. So it was doctrine. Just not the doctrine we tend to argue about.

Its not forgotten (I've heard plenty of sermons regarding John 13:31-35 for instance) so much as ignored as soon as we leave the building.

Wait! You mean those sermons are supposed to inform how I treat people on Tuesday mornings? What?!!
