conundrum

I am a professional nerd working at a professional nerd facility.

I am a functioning social human being.

I also play World of Warcraft.

*gasp* I'm pretty sure those statements together violate some rule of superposition. I'm suprised you took up the game after seeing Phil and me waste hours away on it. What realm are you on?

so, i guess the only significant change you've made in the last five years is that you changed roommates.

I see nothing odd at all about this. Take a look at the rest of the males in your immediate and extended family. You can even extend your gaze as far as your mother's cousin's husband to see how far this set of characteristics extends. If the pattern eludes you, recall a family reunion in mountains remote enough that cell phones didn't work but to which all the males had lugged computers so that they could play together. Enough said?

Choices

Larry especially needs to read this, but I'd appreciate any comments from people who know real information about these -

I am looking at several pistols to buy one of in the 9x19 variety, and it has come down to four (or maybe 5) models. Price isn't the issue, since this is a long term purchase, so the tag is not what I care about.

Frontrunners are the Beretta 92FS or the 90Two.
Following are the Taurus 92 and the Glock 17 (19 is a possibility, but it is significantly smaller and I haven't held it, and since I have large hands that could be an annoyance).

What are the practical differences between these and which is most likely the best choice for target range and home defence? This probably won't be a CCW weapon, as I'll likey get a separate one for that if I decide to get a licence.

On a separate note, I'm also looking at the Remington 1100 TAC-2 or TAC-4 for similar purposes (as a possible addition to, not replacement for the pistol). I've shot a bunch through a Remington tactical before, but as it wasn't mine and it was several years ago, I don't remember which model it was. I liked it a lot though. Anyone have any experience with these or know of a better model?

One of these days I'll get an AR15 but I think two guns is a fine start.

Taurus has really come up in the gun world I have heard good things about the Millennium Pro. One thing I always caution people on with the Glock, it does not have the "second strike" feature and if any little piece of dirt gets in the firing pin area it will not set off the primer. It will on the second strike but not having the "second strike" feature the round must be ejected and reinserted. However, I don't usually recommend autos as first guns. Even though having owned several I have reverted back to my first love, revolvers. I digress. Learn the art of clearing double feeds, stove pipes and failures to eject. As for shotguns, I'm not a shotgun fan but you can't go wrong with Remington.

Back to Glocks. Having owned 5--I’m down to one now that I use for CC--they are accurate and reliable “out of the box” handguns. If you stick with factory ammo there should be no problems. Glocks are also easy to work on if you decide to do some gunsmithing. The only tool you need is a single punch, no sanding or filing, everything fits.

Beretta has a good design. The slide breaks clean from the barrel leaving a open space for the empty to eject. I don't know if Beretta corrected this but they used to have the "L.A. gang member takedown" feature where by one quick motion the slide and barrel could be removed from the frame by your opponent. L.A. gang members learned this when LAPD first started carrying the 92F. I heard that Beretta corrected this.

Interesting. I will have to shoot a few rounds through the ones I haven't before I make a final decision. From everyone I've talked to, it seems like each of these guns has a lot of good qualities and it's going to come down to feel.

Another suggestion, the price of ammo is going through the roof. Watch for deals and if you find one STOCK up. Obama's election has caused a surge in ammo sales. Wal-Mart is pretty good but every once in a while Outdoor world will run a sale. Sometimes web sites will have specials on foreign ammo.

If things keep going we will soon only be able to shoot .22s I stocked up on .223 ammo both military and civilian. As an example, the same box of .223 I used to be able to buy for $8 is not selling for $25. I hhave cut back on my reloading and only load 45 acp and 45 Colt. The magnums were getting to be too much of an additional cost to load for. Still have the .357, 41 and 44 mags but they do more sitting than shooting.

as much as I can figure out from the ^^^above^^^ and from my husband glocks are good..although he would love to have a gun called a SIG with some another number on it. Intrestingly enough 2 out of the four dogs we have owned in the past 3 years have been gun names, we've had a beretta and still have a Sig...beretta unfortunately had to be put down...but not by a beretta.
    by drgann at 11/25/08 4:13PM
  • docholladay
Sig's are nice, but they're a bit pricey. $300 more on average than a beretta of the same caliber, from the places I've looked. On the ammo thing, I have an ex-mil friend/coworker who buys bulk ammo for pretty cheap, so I'll probably get it through him.

OK, we are waiting. The more I think about it you need a man's gun not those wimpy 9mm, 40 and 45 acps. I'm talking 41, 44, 460 and 500 mags. These I've got two of the four and yes, a some of the wimpy calibers too.

having to wait to buy till next month or so, had some unexpected costs. decided on 90-Two unless something else better pops up. PX4-storm was a strong contender but has the LA takedown feature. Bad idea.

Beretta is OK. Not my first choice as I never agreed with the military decision to give up the 1911 for it.

I know it may be a little late, but coming from the owner of a glock 19 I highly recommend Glocks. Sigs are excellent as well, but really expensive. My husband is an ex cop and highly experienced in handguns. He had a Glock 23 that was a little bigger and shot 40 cal. That's my recommendation!

That's my kid, alright. I still remember the year I homeschooled him that I had to put math at the END of the day as a reward for doing social studies and English first. When we did math at the beginning of the day, he would beg, "Please can't we do more math? You like math and I like math, and we could just do more math." How does a mother say, "No more math today. We will absolutely not do any more logic puzzles, sequences, or word problems today." He knew my weak point.

hair

I noticed that my avatar is really dated. It was taken before we even got married, but mostly you can tell it's an old picture because I have HAIR...of any kind. I shaved the goatee (okay, that's not really saying much, it comes and goes with a fair bit of regularity), and I shaved my head. Well, Lindsay did. Or at least she started the trend. I keep my own head shaved these days. Its ubervenient. One of these days I might even post a picture for you scrubs.

pumpkinz

Lindsay and I carved a pretty kitty.

I dressed as Napoleon Dynamite. Sweet!

I have no facial hair at the moment. I suppose that is a good thing.

Neither does my wife, which is also a good thing.

My cat lost her lower fangs (baby teeth) and her new ones are half in.

My computer is beefy, yet has a few issues with BSODs that have to do with manual memory timing. fixing it gradually.

My blog post is incredibly long compared to my usual fare, which I suppose is a good thing.

My height is also incredibly long compared to my waistline, which is also a good thing.

Im out of witty things to say.
