The Iliad and The Odyssey

Mom and I were talking in the car about books that I've read for a co-op we are doing. Recently I read the Iliad and am in the process of finishing the Odyssey. She told me that she wanted me to write a short "paper" comparing and contrasting the two books. It'll be short and not really like I would do a paper, just sort of like I'm conversing it with you. Get the picture? ;) So... to carry out the assignment...

The Iliad and the Odyssey
The Iliad and the Odyssey are two wonderfully written books though their storylines differ greatly. The author, Homer, lived c. 700 B.C. He wrote the Iliad c. 720 B.C. and the Odyssey c. 680 B.C. Many people know of these books by Homer, but have never actually read them. The purpose of this essay is to show you the contrariety and distinction between these two books and the intriguing content of them.



If you are walking up and down the library searching for a book that has strategy, conflict, breath-taking excitement, and more; well look no further! The Iliad is the book for you. Crammed with lots of fighting, the Iliad’s plot is deep and well thought-out. The Greeks and the Trojans are raging war over a beautiful woman; Helen. Up on Mount Olympus, the gods are choosing sides with the mortals and helping whom they see fit. The father of the gods, Zeus, takes the side of the Trojans. His wife however, sides with the oncoming Greeks. Tension is heavy and many die either defending or trying to capture Helen for her true husband, Menelaus. After many, many years of fighting, the war finally comes to a stop. The Greeks give up and go back home… or did they? Before leaving, they leave a gift for the Trojans to sacrifice to a god. The Trojans believing the Greeks were sincere bring the large wooden horse into their city. Only to find the horse was hollowed out inside and packed with Greeks! Find yourself interested? Now Homer turns his attention to another type of book that interests most, the wonderful world of fantasy and myth. The Odyssey is brimming with Cyclops’, visits to Hades, nymphs, gods, you name it, and the Odyssey’s got it. Odysseus has been gone for 20 years supposedly fighting the Trojan War. Yet, not all of the time that he was away from his homeland was he fighting. He had been captured by the beautiful nymph Calypso. She kept him on her island hoping he would someday marry her. He refused time after time and finally, she released him. She gave him and ship, clothing and food and sent him on his way. He sailed for a while and came to the place of the Cyclops. While there he ends up putting out one of the Cyclops’ single eye. That was a bad move, that Cyclops was Poseidon the Earth Shaker’s son. And he wasn’t one bit happy about Odysseus’ putting out his son’s eye. There’s a teaser for you. To read more about what happens to Odysseus, all you have to is go to a nearby library and find the Odyssey!



I’ve given you a short idea of what the Iliad and the Odyssey consist of. The rest is all on you. Your personality will decide which book would be of more interest to you. There is a little bit of everything in these books, no matter what your idea of a good book is, there is a chance that you two would like it just as well as anyone else. Whether you are looking for blood and gore, or exciting myths and adventure, these two amazing books are the place to go.

I bought Inkdeath on the day it came out but..uh...just haven't quite read it yet xD Anyways, the ending wasn't what I expected because it leaves no plot for Inkspell if they already send Dustfinger home and Farid doesn't want to follow him or anything...That's all

    Inkheart was a cool movie. I watched it with my friend on the day it came out since her b-day was the next day. The ending was just not what I expected though.
