@Last post: I think the upcoming rockband has added a keyboard and even offer a realistic fretted guitar from Fender. :-p I actually enjoy Rockband, it makes a great party game. Other than that we hardly play it. I enjoy rockband as a party game but I do get annoyed when people spend their lives playing it or put tons of energy and money into it, or even brag about their accomplishments in the game. That being said I play a REAL guitar and am learning to play REAL keyboards.

LEARN HOW TO PLAY!!!

Okay, I think I've been quiet long enough....and I may step on some people's toes....

Stop playing rock band, guitar hero, harmonica hero, oboe hero, or [insert name of random instrument here] hero and learn to actually play an instrument! I was walking into Wal-Mart tonight and saw a poster for the new "DJ Hero" coming out soon where you can now "learn" how to scratch on your X-Box. SERIOUSLY?! I don't particularly enjoy that kind of music, but if you want to do it that badly, learn how to actually use turntables. I know that is an expensive hobby; I've seen guys set up their equipment and it has to cost mucho dinero. But do you think you're going to suddenly start spinning at your friends' birthday parties because you mastered the pressing of buttons on a game console?

If people spent as much time and effort learning how to actually play an instrument instead of trying to master the highest levels of these video games, we would see the next wave of great musicians springing forth. Instead, we get a mass of glass-eyed, zombie children who talk about how they wish they could play guitar or drums or sing. Stop sinking your money into the games, the controllers, and your X-Box live subscription; save up, buy a guitar, take voice lessons, and form a band.

My guitar has strings, not buttons....

*steps off soap box

I'm just waiting for pitch pipe hero to come out.

Seriously though, I agree. I've played Guitar Hero a couple times. It's alright. But not anything I could spend much time playing. Besides, when I try to play songs that I've already learned for real, I get messed up because my fingers have already been trained how to actually play the songs on a real guitar.

I love both. I've played guitar for 11-ish years now (have had an honest-to-goodness band for 7+) and I've played Guitar Hero/Rock Band since they came out and think they're a blast. I think most people who play the games play them for a different reason than a want to learn & play music. Guitar Hero/Rock Band/whatever are well made games from a design perspective. They have all the features that keep people coming back to play even after "beating" them. The modes are great, the difficulty levels (generally) have a nice progression, the scoring is fun, the upgrades you can earn are fun, etc. I think the reason people love playing it so much - and spend so much time doing so - is not because they have any desire to learn to play music. It's just because it's a fun game that appeals to both hardcore & casual gamers that just so happens to include some great music. So you get the benefit of playing a great game while listening to (and being somewhat involved in) your favorite music.

I think the games are a great invention. On the one hand it takes something as complex as playing an instrument and lets anyone do it. This is great game design! On the other hand it takes something as complex as playing an instrument and lets anyone do it. It really trivializes the process for those who do work hard at playing an instrument well.

I'm not saying I never play video games, but I just don't like the concept to begin with. Go for a walk, read a book, hang out with some people (especially your family), watch a movie, invent something, DO something!

Excellent point, that's why my kids have very limited access to our xbox and to be very realistic the Xbox is used more to watch movies than play games. I, of course, am totally on the learn how to play an instrument band wagon. Seeing that I have Oboe, flute, piccolo and voice under my belt. Our 5 year old daughter is asking to learn how to play the piano so I am going to start looking into lessons for her. Thanks for the soap box moment!

I had to smile. We Americans like things to come easy to us...if it's hard, we quit. Or never try. Unless a Japanese company comes up with a way for us to play without much practice.

A few points in response to the comments above:

    1. An American company made Rock Band and Guitar Hero =). Guitar Hero was made by a company close to where I live - Harmonix in Westwood, MA. I have met many of the developers and they are very much American.
Also, playing Guitar Hero or Rock Band on a hard difficulty is not easy at all! In fact, it's incredibly difficult and requires dedication and practice. It's just a type of practice that most people assume is a waste for some reason - despite the fact that most players get satisfaction and enjoyment from it. And I don't see that as a total waste.
    2. I think watching a movie is more of a waste of time than playing a video game. Watching a movie is a completely uninvolved, passive activity. The watcher is only a spectator with absolutely no involvement with the ongoings, puzzles or outcome. With a video game, the player is directly involved with the action and is therefore forced to think and mentally (and sometimes physically with games like Dance Dance Revolution, Rock Band, etc) involve themselves in the progression of the game. They are required to react, solve puzzles and actively participate. Being idle is not an option with a video games. With most movies, it's the only option.
    3. Best comment so far. ^_^

You've got a good point there. Maybe for a few kids, the games will inspire them to try the real thing some day. But, maybe not.

I was reading an article a couple of months ago, I wish I could find a link for it. I stated that guitar sales are actually up in recent years. Many believe that guitar hero is inspiring a new generation to begin playing the real thing.

I have to say, I STINK at guitar hero on the guitar and the drums bc I know how you're supposed to REALLY play them in real life. At least, that's what I blame my sub-par ability at Guitar-hero on;) TOTALLY agree with you! We really want our kids to learn to play an instrument... it's just so much fun!

First week in the books

So, my first week as a college instructor is officially in the books today. I am teaching a section of WKU's University Experience course. It is a 2 hour credit class that meets two days a week. In my case, it meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:50pm to 2:45pm.

Several have asked what I'm teaching, and in an effort to head off other questions at the pass, let me explain what University Experience is. Many colleges/universities offer a class that is designed to help its first year students be successful at their schools. They show students how to access tutoring services, major/career counseling, and how to use the library. WKU's version certainly covers all these kinds of topics.

In addition, WKU's version tries to help college freshmen to stop thinking like a high school student and start thinking like a college student. To do this, there is a big emphasis on critical thinking. We use a lot of resources from the Foundation for Critical Thinking, as well as some textbooks that are designed to make you examine things from a much different perspective than most people are accustomed. The department administers a critical thinking pre-test at the beginning of the semester (this is what we did today) and then they administer the same test again at the end of the semester. After taking this class, the test scores have increased, on average, by 28%.

At any rate, it is a new and interesting challenge that I think I'll really enjoy.

In addition to that I am starting another graduate program at WKU (pause for groans). However, it is not a full Master's degree. It is a graduate certificate in Community College Faculty Preparation (designed to help someone prepare to be a community college instructor). It is only 9 hours, so, Lord willing, it will be finished by next spring (1 course this semester and then a seminar and practical experience in the spring).

So, it should be a busy semester. I hope all of you are doing well.

Sounds exciting! Hope you enjoy it all, which sounds like you are!!
