Summer Reading
Here are some really good summer reading programs offered by area bookstores. I thought I would share and help more of you get some new books for your kids! :)
1. Borders
Kids 12 and under read 10 books this summer and receive one free off of a list. We got some neat books last year for the kids to grow into. They usually have a few Newberry winners listed. We are making this more challenging this year as only chapter books are going on Andrew's list.
2. Barnes and Nobel
Kids read 8 books and get one free off of a list. The form lists books for grades 1st-6th, but both of my kids did it last year. I already know which books I am going to help the kids pick, James and the Giant Peach and Stanley, Flat Again! We have been reading a lot of Flat Stanley books lately and both kids love them.
3. Half Price Books
Kids 14 and under read 15 minutes every day in June and July, ultimate goal is 600 minutes, and receive a $5 gift card to spend in the store. Read more than 600 minutes and get entered to win a $20 gift card.
You can print all of the reading logs and book lists off the store websites to get started right away.
also don't forget to check out your libraries for summer reading programs. A lot of them now even have programs for the babies which is awesome!!!! Looking forward to getting new books, tickets to to Magic House (fantastic children's museum), baseball tickets and more just for READING to my kids which I love to do anyway! :)
Happy reading everyone!

I had seen the Borders one - didn't know about B&N or HPB - super excited now!! Our library does a summer reading program, where the kids turn in a log as often as once a week and get a prize for each log they turn in. It's little stuff like bubbles, but still. :) -
Love it!!! Thanks! -
I love when kids can be motivated to read. I wish my grandkids lived where they had programs like the ones you listed. -
Oh, I wish we had a Half Price Books here. But, we do have a B&N and we're doing the library's program. Thanks for sharing these. -
My kids have so enjoyed all the busy bag items! They have been such a blessing during a busy time in our lives! There have been some other great ideas online for busy bags. I hope you have been able to take advantage of some of them? -
Yes, we are using that very book! Thanks for the encouragement! -
You can get a very cheap little booklet called, "The Three Cycle Approach" by Bob Waldron describing it in more detail. And I'm doing it with the boys for that very reason... it is a wonderful "scaffold" on which they can build a lifetime of Bible knowledge. We've been working on this for a couple of years and they know an astonishing amount of Bible... I'm amazed! -
Joliet library does have the Brookfield Zoo passes, but they're VERY hard to get - they only have a couple, and they always get snapped up quickly!! We tried to do that last year, but ended up not getting one, so we just went and paid. Once we decide when to go, we might try again. -
Katie, I would love some of your bean recipes. -
katie, i've seen you post here and there on pleo. hope you guys are doing well! can you post a pic of you guys with the kids - i' d love to see them! -
That sounds great - Hand-made gifts are always my favorite. Glad that you know how to do it, and that you take the time to... those are the best.
