Project Caden

Tomorrow I'm going on a run put together by a group of friends to raise money for two year-old Caden Ledbetter.

On July 26, 2007 his family discovered that a knot on Caden's head was thought to be a bone tumor. After further testing, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. Tumors were located in his left adrenal gland, abdomen, liver spine, sternum, bone marrow, and two in his skull.

His family is now responsible for an $18K deductible and $45,000 for Caden's stem cell transplant, which was deemed an "Out of Network" procedure by their insurance company.

So I'm asking for your help - to raise money to cover his medical expenses and Neuroblastoma Research. Even if it's just a little bit, because a collection of little bits can be a huge thing.

To donate:
  • Click the button below, it will take you to the Discovery! donation site.
  • When you get to the site, select "Discovery Life" from the "I am paying for" dropdown.
  • Put "Caden" in the "Memo/Trainee name" blank.

Tim Keller speaking at Google

I think Keller is one of the most important thought leaders on theology and culture today. He recently released a book (I'm about 50 pages into it) on the same topic as this talk: "The Reason for God."

While the book is written to address common questions and points of skepticism toward Christianity, he begins with an important point to Christians as well:

"Believers should acknowledge and wrestle with doubts - - not only their own but their friends' and neighbors'. It is no longer sufficient to hold beliefs just because you inherited them. Only if you struggle long and hard with objections to your faith will you be able to provide grounds for your beliefs to skeptics, including yourself, that are plausible rather than ridiculous or offensive. And...such a process will lead you, even after you come to a position of strong faith, to respect and understand those who doubt."

For a wealth of Keller essays and resources, check out Steve McCoy's blog.

"ouch."

I'm sorry, but this little Brit and his tiny demon brother are adorable.

What's the dumbest thing that happened to you last week?

Mine was one of the following:

* I tried to do the worm and nearly carpet-burned my chin.

* I missed my mouth when drinking coffee and poured it straight onto my belly.

* I told someone with a baby girl that "he is completely adorable," (this is not the first time this has happened).

hi bubbly. i actually go to church way up in Flower Mound. The few churches I'm aware of in the Rowlett/Garland are (and I've never attended, just heard of them) are: The church of Christ at 2828 Campbell Road, Centerville Road Church of Christ, Heritage Church, and Rowlett Church of Christ. Hope that helps!

Ode to Auto-Tune

Back in the day, if you couldn't sing on pitch you probably wouldn't make it as a professional vocalist. But that was then. Today we live in a future of Poop-Freeze, the Hollywood Cookie Diet, and Auto-Tune.

Since 1997, Auto-Tune has been correcting pitch so musicians no longer have to. The side effect is a vaguely (or less vaguely, depending on the artist) robotic vocal sound (think K-Ci and JoJo's "All My Life," or Cher's "Believe").

Audio engineering blog Hometracked published a list of 10 great examples of Auto-Tune abuse in pop songs, including:
  • Uncle Kracker - Follow Me
  • Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved
  • Rascal Flatts - Life is a Highway
Below is my take, set to some light music, on the issue of Auto-Tune. I hope you enjoy it:
