KCK, Hoo-hah!/Santa Fe
Some of the KCK girls (Koester Cabin Kids, a.k.a. Camp Noah buds), including me, are doing some totally awesome quoting of Newsies songs on our blogs. Oh the fun days when we would wait in long lines for the use of the shower stalls, sing Newsies songs at the top of our lungs, and imitate Newsies choreography! We usually sang the peppier songs, like "Ain't it a Fine Life" and "The King of New York." However, I'm sure that we all remember Jack Kelley's beautiful ballad, Santa Fe. Leader of the "poor orphans and runaways," Jack Kelley was a Newsie with a dream instead of a family. He appeared confident and independent, possessing the gumption to stand against the injustice of the Pullitzer Newspaper company by organizing the Newsie strike; but the Santa Fe scene shows Jack in a different light, one in which he speaks of a powerful, inward longing that awakens in the quiet night.
The words to this song are especially touching, and even though many teenagers probably don't have the exact same dream of escaping from dirty New York city to the open Santa Fe, I think we can all relate to Jack's feelings. Of course, at the end of the movie, Jack realizes that "breakin' your back for someone else's sake" is well worth the effort, and, recognizing the value of being with those you care about, chooses to remain in New York with the friends that have become his adopted family. Still, before all that happens, Jack pours his heart out in this song, and speaks of the dream that so many of us have...to escape to some better place.
Santa Fe
So that's what they call a family,
Mother, daughter, father, son;
Guess that everything you heard about is true.
So you ain't got any family;
Well who says ya needed one?
Ain't glad nobody's waitin' up for you?
When I dream
On my own
I'm alone but I ain't lonely;
For a dreamer night's the only time of day.
When the city's finally sleepin'
All my thoughts begin to stray
And I'm on the train that's bound for Santa Fe.
And I'm free
Like the wind
Like I'm gonna live forever;
It's a feeling time can never take away.
All I need's a few more dollars,
And I'm out of here to stay;
Dreams come true,
Yes they do, in Santa Fe.
Where does it say you gotta live and die here?
Where does it say a guy can't catch a break?
Why should you only take what you're given?
Why should you spend your whole life liven'
Trapped where there ain't no future,
Even at seventeen?
Breakin' your back for someone else's sake.
If your life don't seem to suit ya,
How 'bout a change of scene?
Far from the lousy headlines
And the deadlines in between?
Santa Fe
Are you there?
Do you swear you won't forget me?
If I found ya would you let me come and stay?
I ain't gettin' any younger
And before my dyin' day,
I want space;
Not just air;
Let'm laugh in my face,
I don't care.
Save a place...
I'll be there.
So that's what they call a family.
Ain't you glad you ain't that way?
Ain't you glad...
You've got a dream called...
Santa Fe.
