"That poor old wooden head"

I'm still plugging along at the exercising, but the walking-daily-with-no-excuse fell by the wayside for one reason or another. OOOOH. That sounds lame. :( But I have done SOMETHING almost daily for the last two weeks. With the muscle loss in my lower legs, there are other types of workouts/exercises I need to concentrate on before pounding the pavement everyday; but pounding the pavement is still my goal.

This morning I worked out on the Gazelle for about 30 minutes...accompanied by...The Sons of Pioneers..."Drifting along with the tumble-ing tumbleweed!" Gene has a CD and it made a great accompaniment for gazellin'.

I learned (re-learned!) the demise of Jesse James and Billy the Kid. And poor ole' Kalija; that poor old wooden head! Someone bought his sweetheart! :( I never knew the actual truth about that love-lorn totem-pole because I grew up with the Homer and Jethro version. Anyone remember them? (By the way, all three of us siblings think the other one ended up with that album. Hmmm)

And then there was "Cool, Clear Water" which came when I needed it most...at the end!

Enjoy the day! Ours looks to be sunny and cool.

I understand exercising falling by the wayside. For me, one day of interruption and not being able to do it leads me into not even thinking about it on subsequent days. Apparently I don't have it too high up on my To-Do list :)
I try to tell myself that hoisting an 18 lb cutie is work out enough!

Now that song is rattling around in my head...lucky me. And, no, I have never purchased a Van Halen recording (I lived in the dorms, I heard everything when in college).

Not to be a Tattle Tale (Tail?), I think I remember seeing that album in Jimmy's stash. But of course, I can't really testify to that in the Stevens Court of Justice since I'm married to him. What is that law that makes me exempt from testifying against my spouse.....?

I keep hearing health advisors who advocate our moving 30 minutes a day. Seems like a long, painful, slow way to relocate.

She was the daughter of Sittin' Bull
    This wooden Indian dame
She told Kaw-Liga Squattin' Heifer was her name
    Kaw-Liga (echoing war whoops)
When he tried to hold her many charms
Kaw-Liga, he got splnters in his arms.

I have a Homer & Jethro cd with this song on it. I'll have to listen to the original song before H&J got a hold of it. ;-)

^^^^ha ha! Thank you! Here's more of the H & J version that I remember:

Poor Old Kaw-Liga finally got a kiss!
Poor Old Kaw-Liga wished that he had missed!
Is it any wonder, that his face is red?
Kaw-liga, he had termites in his head!

I well remember Homer & Jethro. My parents had one of their albums. I guess I should say may dad still has it. I ought to have him transfer it to a cd for me. My folks like comedy albums, did you ever hear of Wendy Bagwell? They played that every time we had company. He was more of a story teller like Jerry Clower (another one of my favorites).

Well, I am embarressed to say (which is why I have not posted anything new) that my exercise class went by the wayside all too fast. First, the gal I was going with was sick and now I am sick....the class even though free is just a bit too far to have to drive each time, so re-thinking that since I DO have a wii and "several" exercises games for it....wouldn't it make more sense to do it in the comfort of my own home without going anywhere....although I have yet to get in a routine, I "plan" on doing so......soon....:)

How do you know you have muscle loss in your lower legs? I don't have strength in my legs, especially if I am on the floor, and try to get up, have to put my weight on my hands on something higher, and push up. Is that what you have? What causes it?

I think Gene and my dad would have gotten along just great! The Sons of the Pioneers were one of my dad's favorite old C&W groups. Can't forget about Hank Sr. either. I think "cool. clear water" was a Frankie Lane song.

Remember Frankie Lane? He was the one that made Rawhide famous. That show brought Clint Eastwood to the TV screen.

TV was a lot better back then, but then so was everything else. You could raise your children without the government telling you how to do it.

BTW, did you know that Hank Williams wrote the song Kawliga on a napkin in a little diner close to a lake in Alabama...He saw a wooden Indian standing outside this place...went in for a cup of coffee and started writing the song....at least I think that's how it went....someone else may know more details.
    Folks from Alabama especially.

I think there may be a Sons of the Pioneers album in the stacks in our basement. John bought it years ago because it had "San Antonio Rose" on it. I'll just have to go dig that up and see if I can be inspired by it to use our Gazelle!

Hidden under all that hair

...must have been a Bluetooth, but the lady in Palais Royal today looked to me like she was talking to herself. Loudly, and authoritatively, while often making eye contact with me. Was she worried that I thought she looked silly?

Well, she was right.

Monday musings

Aren't you glad that the time change happens on the Lord's Day? If it's got to happen, I'm glad it's on a day when we are used to getting in gear anyway for things that transcend time and concerns of this earthly life.

Okay...go ahead; call me Pollyanna. I don't mind. That's the road I choose to take!

We have one member who I don't think would agree with me. She arrived in time for worship and wondered why EVERYONE was settling in the auditorium. She told me afterward that she thought we'd made a change and weren't having Bible Class anymore and was quite disturbed, until she happened to take a look at the clock on her cell phone and then...she felt very small. Do you have any time change *woops* stories?

Our attendance was low yesterday as many were out of town with spring break beginning. But we did have one family visiting with us, former members, whose son, Luke, used to be one of my students. Luke is such a special young man - Gene describes him as one "in whom is no guile". So tender, honest and pure in heart. He looked like he had grown 6 inches in this last year since they have been gone, and I commented on that. He said, "Yes, I have been burning a lot of calories. (nose scrunched) Is that what happens when you burn calories?" I love that boy. We miss him and his whole family!

The cabinet idea in my classroom seems to be working well. The students come in anticipating a part in the lesson. Samantha's "job" yesterday was to pretend she was Moses and to speak to the rest of the class the words of Moses at the end of his first speech in Deuteronomy. I told her to listen to me read the 2 verses and then put in her own words what Moses said (The Lord Himself is God; keep His commandments; teach them to your children; you will live long). I failed to take into consideration that Samantha is our thorough, don't-leave-anything-out student, so this sort of messed with her brain. When she finally got started, she was very shy and weak about it. After a few proddings, she finally shouted out, "The Lord is God; Keep His commandments!" and so forth, with some whispered hints from me. My first thought is that I shouldn't give her those type assignments, but then again, we won't grow "all nice and rounded" if we're not pushed out of our comfort zones and made to think outside the box. My goal is to help them put the lesson in their own words. Accurately, of course.

The cabinet idea is also testing the others who want to steal the answers from the child-of-the-moment. Of course, we all have that issue with the children now and then, don't we? But this creates an obvious "this is their job" and "you are out of line". So everyone is learning better cooperation skills.

I appreciated your comments below when I posted about this idea. If it got your juices flowing for your own situations, I'm thrilled. I enjoy hearing of the things that you try.

Well, my friends, make it a good day!
  • kennen
I reaped the benefits of daylight savings time today when Ryker slept until 8!!

I have two time change stories. We have one friend who thought ALL clocks change on their own so one year she was late too. We have another friend who thought you had to stay up until 2am to change them. We all just laugh at him :)

About 10 years ago our family was at the breakfast table on Sunday morning eating our oatmeal @ 8:30 when Russ jumped up and shouted " We're late for services"!! He had just remembered the time change! So it was really 9:30 the time our worship starts! Russ had to call the building and have them delay the Lord's Supper while we hurriedly got dressed. We got teased about that for months!!

Hey, Pollyanna! Nothing wrong with facing the inevitable cheerfully. We make it a practice to move our clocks forward after supper on Saturday night rather than at bedtime. That seems to trick me into going to bed earlier. No malfunctions to report...

I love reading your updates :) No stories this year and we all arrived on time and I think you are right - having somewhere as a place to go helps get us up and going. That said, all of us struggled getting out of bed this a.m.!

We used to try (when possible) to move the clock up early Saturday afternoon or even on Friday night! Then in the fall, we'd wait till the kids went to bed to get our "extra" hour. It worked till they got old enough to tell time themselves. Sigh. My mom's favorite story is about my sister Rose -- when she was about 5, she heard everybody talking about "losing" an hour. When she woke up Sunday morning, she remarked, "That really WAS a little bitty night!"

Michelle and I are teaching the Wednesday Night kid class this month. Michelle bought a book of Bible skits. We are taking 2 weeks to do a skip. The first week to practice and the 2nd week to refine, while learning the lesson as well. For example, our first skit was King Josiah. It emphasized the importance of reading and studying God's word.

But I am also reminded of what I heard that a friend of mine did back in Atlanta. I may get the details wrong, but what he did was this... He gave all of the students something at the beginning of the class and told them that they must keep it in their grasp for the entire class period. He then proceeded to teach a lesson of Christ's sacrifice from Phillipians 2. At the end of the class period, all of the students had to give back the candy bar they had been holding...

5Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6Who, being in very nature[a] God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,

No "woops" this time....but there have been some in the past..

Thanks for posting the Tumbleweed song on Anne's blog. That was a favorite song of mine, and since I grew up in Nebraska, knew exactly what that song was about! I played it this morning, and my husband asked for a Sons of the Pioneers CD, if I could find one. Hooray! He's VERY difficult to gift things that will please him. He actually remembers going to see them in Modesto, California, decked out with chaps and two pistols and holsters. At about 5 years old, he thought he was really something.
