Book Suggestions

Audie is reading. I am not sure how he learned as he resisted every effort I made to teach him but he is in fact reading and each day I realize he can read better than I realized. He is reading some things that are a 1st grade level. Because of this, he has started enjoying chapter books. We are reading the magic treehouse series together and he loves these. I wanted to get him some other chapter books to read on his own. Any suggestions? He devours books (read a 94 page chapter book in less than a day) so we go to the library often so anything that would be at the library is great.
Thanks

Some books he may enjoy are... Ready Freddy, Junie B. Jones, Arthur, Mr. Popper's Penguins, Horrible Harry, Flat Stanley, Young Cam Janson, or the Frog and Toad series--this will be a good start at least :)

Patrick and I have been reading our way through Magic Tree House and Boxcar Children since last year. Nate the Great and Henry and Mudge tend to be about 40 pages each - Patrick likes those, too. We tried Horrible Harry but I didn't like it much because I don't think Patrick understood how a little boy could have a crush on a girl (or maybe I just want to pretend he couldn't understand it). :) My nephew is 8 and likes Encyclopedia Brown mysteries. I haven't read one in decades so I don't know if it's easy to read.

I'm also a big fan of getting non-fiction books, too. Animals are in the 590s - there's lots of 24 page books with simple language on snakes, frogs, etc. Patrick also likes sports, biographies, etc.

Patrick likes being babied so much I'm not sure he'll admit when he learns how to read! He'll probably give it away, though - that boy can't keep a secret. :)

Hank the Cowdog are also pretty enjoyable if he's into mysteries. And I LOVE Beverly Cleary books- it's a lot more "old fashioned" than some of the newer series and my students have been enjoying those tremendously.

Here's a website for Magic Tree House where you can print out a passport. Each time you read a book you answer 3 multiple choice questions and earn a stamp (print out and glue in). Didn't know if Audie would like that or not.

That's awesome Audie can read! Keep exposing him to different things - you never know what might stick. :)

any boy named Audie should definitely be reading Hank the Cowdog! i'd avoid junie b. jones until he's a little more grounded in grammar. yikes.
