Butter Braids

Audie's school is selling Butter Braids again this year!! I am by no means pushing this on anyone but these are very yummy and you cannot get them in the stores. The flavors are Apple, Blueberry & Cream Cheese, Caramel Roll, Cherry, Cinnamon and Cream Cheese. If you want one or more let me know. They are $12 each. The checks should be made out to Carol Holt PTA. The orders are due on October 21st. Thanks!!

We should have a referral in 6 to 7 months. That's partly why we chose Ethiopia.

Warm Clothes

Does anyone have any winter hats, snow pants or boots for girls or any gloves (not ski type) for boys? We are going to see my aunt in South Dakota next week and it is still definitely winter there!! Since my aunt lives on a farm we are figuring there will not be much for the kids to do but what a great opportunity to play in the snow that we don't really see here!!
  • polaramy
Did you find anything? I was home with Samantha Wednesday. We don't have heavy-duty stuff, just regular Texas-strength winter stuff, but you can borrow it if you need to. Patrick has a scarf and hat someone crocheted for him (a Gryffindor pattern), and Samantha has a few different hats/mittens/scarves. Will you be here Sunday, or are you leaving this weekend?

"Holiday Party" Suggestions

I am supposed to be planning the holiday party for Audie's class. I think that means I plan some games and food and get other parents to help. I have e-mailed his teacher but am assuming that since we are in public school there can be no reference to any sort of holiday that occurs in the winter (ie. I could not have a christmas tree). Do any of you have suggestions?
  • scline
Maybe make things like snowmen or gingerbread houses/men. Things related to the holidays but not Christmas. I'm helping with Jordyn's class party but I haven't yet heard what we can and cannot have.

Hmm, not sure about the Christmas tree. At the school where I worked the office puts up a tree every year and the teachers also have one in their classrooms. Guess it just depends on the school and principal.

the elimination of the term "Christmas" from society drives me crazy.... maybe you should bring Jack-o-Laterns and an Easter Bunny to make a point about how silly such is! ;-)

How about a winter version of pin the tail on the donkey? You could do throw the snowball at the teacher/snowman/cat/whatever. If you could make the snowman and background out of felt, then they could throw a velcro ball at it. Or you could just draw it and have paper snowballs that they put near a mark while blindfolded.

Crafts are fun like cutting snowflakes and making those pinecone/peanut butter/birdseed bird feeders.

(If you're not going to be throwing stuff, then I guess pin the carrot nose on the snowman makes more sense.)

Is bingo taboo for being to gamble-y? It would be easy to come up with non-religious icons (snowflake, hot chocolate, holly leaf, poinsettia, scarf, mittens, sled, wrapped present, etc) and play bingo. You could simplify it by just choosing 5 pictures and make each column a different color with all 5 pictures in each column.

The parents at our school turned the "Christmas" party (which is what I always ended up calling it!) into a "New Years" party. It was for third graders, but they made little cracker snacks, fruit and veggies, and then sparkling apple juice. They would do little New Years type crafts- I think they bought many of them from Oriental Trading.

    Good luck!

I actually have a 3' Christmas tree in my classroom as does just about every other teacher and the school buy a 7' tree to put in the foryer. Anyway...we always play holiday bingo (check out dltk.com). I can give you other suggestions on Sunday.

I agree with Mark. Is a pine tree a Christmas tree or a pine tree?

We Are HOME!!!

What a week!! Audie came home from school on Wednesday with a stomach bug and I thought that was bad until our pediatrician sent me to the ER with Ella for the infected lymph node in her neck. That resulted in 2 nights in the hospital, IV antibiotics for 3 days and surgery to drain the abscess. We are still waiting to find out what kind of infection it is but she is on an antibiotic that covers most everything. (which also tastes TERRIBLE so if anyone has a suggestion on how to get it in her I would welcome that, we have tried egg nog and ice cream, both failed). We now wait and pray that this antibiotic does kill the bacteria and that her incision heals well. This was and continues to be very scary but she was quite a trooper. We are actually having a harder time getting this medicine in her than we did during most of the hospital stay!!

I will say that if you have to experience a medical issue with your child, Cook Children's in Fort Worth is the place to be. Everyone we dealt with from nurses to ER docs to surgeons was wonderful to us. They made a difficult situation have a bright side.

Thank you to everyone who prayed for Ella. They helped, we have gotten through a lot so far. Please keep praying she will take her medicine and she totally heals.

Hope she recovers fast. I love Cooks when we have to go.

Butter Braids- Yum!!

Audie's school is selling Butter Braids. For those of you who have not tasted these amazing things you are missing out..they are wonderful. They come frozen, you take them out, thaw them, let them rise and bake them. Each one serves about 11 people (or 1 depending on your willpower). I am NOT pressure selling anyone, I just wanted to see if any of you wanted any as they are not something you can get in the stores (as far as I know).

The flavors are Apple, Blueberry & Cream Cheese, Bavarian Creme(with chocolate icing), Cinnamon or Cream Cheese. They also have a 9 piece Caramel Roll. They are each $12.

If you are interested just post here what you want and bring me a check made out to Carol Holt PTA. We have to turn the orders in on October 29th.

Thanks!!
  • markroberts
