Whether you voted for McCain or President Obama, you made history! If you didn't vote...well you missed out and I shouldn't hear any complaining from you for the next 4 years! ;)I voted for the first time yesterday, which was one of the most liberating experiences of my life.
I'm not going to get on here and get on one of my many soap boxes, but I just wanted to express my appreciation and gratitude that I was blessed to live in a country where elections are not manipulated or pre-determined by the government. From time to time I watch Oprah in the afternoon and naturally yesterday was talking about the election. They had new American citizens share their experience from the country the were born and raised. From the Rwanda genocide to the former Soviet Union, the accounts both broke my heart and gave me strength. These people understand fully the meaning of FREEDOM which is something we very much take for granted.
Also, I'm proud to be an American because less than 40 years ago, my life would have been dramatically different. I, along with many other African-Americans wouldn't have been able to walk through the same doors, drink out of the same fountains, ride next to on a bus, along with countless other injustices. It's no secret to many of you that I have personally dealt with my share of racism growing up in the area that our family lived. Some people say it doesn't matter the color of the skin, but I would like to say that we, as the African-American community and nation as a whole, have made history and I am so grateful. Whether you agree with the politics of President Elect Obama, you have to admit that our country has come very far in a very short time.
I feel safe and protected being an American. We take for granted that we can go to the polls every 4 years in November and vote for the leader we desire. We take for granted that our government isn't trying to poison us or cruelly ration our food. I am proud to be an American because I can NOW I can truly tell my children..."You can truly be anything you want to be in America!" November 4, 2008 will forever be a groundbreaking date in my heart.
In the words of President Obama..."If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer."
YES WE CAN!!...AND WE DID!!!
