I posted this last year, but until I find something that better expresses the events and feelings of this event, I will continue to post this:
Yesterday, Dec. 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.
The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with the government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.
Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleagues delivered to the Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. While this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or armed attack.
It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. Very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.
Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an attack against Malaya.
Last night, Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.
Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam.
Last night, Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.
Last night, the Japanese attacked Wake Island.
This morning, the Japanese attacked Midway Island.
Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.
As commander in chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense.
Always will we remember the character of the onslaught against us.
No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.
I believe I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again.
Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.
With confidence in our armed forces - with the unbounding determination of our people - we will gain the inevitable triumph - so help us God.
I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, Dec. 7, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese empire.
-Speech delivered to the United States Congress by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Pearl Harbor was that generation's 9/11. The World War II veterans in this country are dwindling in numbers. You can read their obituaries in the newspaper everyday. I would like to say thank you to both of my grandfathers, a soldier and a sailor, for their service to this country, and I would like to thank all of the active duty, reserve, and veteran servicemen and women that are on Pleo. Say a prayer, visit a memorial, thank a veteran. Let us never repeat the treatment our veterans were given returning home from Vietnam, and may we never forget the sacrifices that were made and are being made everyday. God Bless America.
You know, I actually remembered Pearl Harbor when they said it was Dec 7th on the news this morning...and I thought about you..haha have a great weekend!
Hey-I finally got invitations mailed today. I'll also put some out at church on Sunday. Thanks for offering to help. I can definitely use you that night!
People just dont' talk like that or feel patriotic like that much anymore. We need more of them in our country today, and we definatley need to revere the few who are left from yester-years.
I can't really participate in that discussion; I've only seen about half of an X-men movie, and I'm not sure which one it was. (Where Phoenix, I think, goes berserk.) I was never a fan of X-Men anyway though.
If I comment here, will you see it? I'll try to find a copy of Twilight for you to read ... I'm currently in the middle of it. I think Abbie B. would be able to lend it to you. I'll ask her, k? :)
OH, and yeah. I was not a huge fan of him in GoF. I mean, I thought Viktor was way cuter. Anyway, try not to let the image get stuck in your head. Have you seen abbie's post about Gaspard? Look for it ... he's the "real" Edward! :)
I memorized parts of that speach in high school and still remember it. My parents told stories of learining of the attack and life durring the war (like my mother's older sister teaching school in a volcano near Pearl Harbor during the latter days of the war) and also my dh's uncle is now writing a book about his experiences as a POW in the Philipines (he survived the "Battan death march")
Yeah, we were discussing Bing Crosby as we were watching the movie - he has the most amazing voice - not just when he sings, but when he talks too!! :)
Hey! It's Jeannie. How's school going? When are you going to be teaching with me at Harrison? I would love to bump into you in the mail room occasionally!
things are going good here..... just listening to Breaking Benjamin.... this group rocks!!..... did you know we are part of a new work in Alpharetta..? Our first service is Sunday, Mar 30th...
When ever I go to Starbucks, I always read my cup. Usually it has "the Way I See It #____" and someone has written a little blurb about his/her perspective of the world. Because we have entered into the holiday season, the cups now say "Pass the Cheer", and give an example of how you can do that.
The blurb from my grande chai latte: "A good way to pass the cherr when you're on the road is to pay the toll for the car behind you. Do this and you might start to look at stoplights as holiday lights instead. Red mean stop and be thankful for the moment. Green means go out and do nice things."
I would submit my own additional thought: Yellow means slow down and look for opportunities.
Going along with recent posts from Eddie and Than, let us all(pointing a finger at myself) be on the look out for ways to serve each other.

Welcome to the planet
Welcome to existence
Everyone's here, everyone's here
Everybody's watching you now
Everyboy waits for you now
What happens next? what happens next?
I dare you to move, I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move, I dare you to move
Like today never happened, today never happened before
Welcome to the fallout
Welcome to resistance
The tension is here, the tension is here
Between who you are and who you could be
Between how it is and how it should be
I dare you to move, I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move, I dare you to move
Like today never happened, today never happened before
MAybe redemption has stories to tell
Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell
Where can you run to escape from yourself?
Where you gonna go? where you gonna go?
Salvation is here
I dare you to move, I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself, lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move, I dare you to move
Like today never happened, today never happened
Today never happened, today never happened before

Hello, good morning, how you do?
What makes your rising sun so new?
I could use a fresh beginning to
All of my regrets are nothing new
So this is the way that I say I need You
This is the way, this is the way that I'm
Learning to breathe
I'm learning to crawl
I'm finding that You and You alone can break my fall
I'm living again, awake and alive
I'm dying to breathe in these abundant skies
Hello, good morning, how you been?
Yesterday left my head kicked in
I never, never thought that I would fall like that
Never knew that I could hurt this bad
Learning to breathe
I'm learning to crawl
I'm finding that You and You alone can break my fall
I'm living again, awake and alive
I'm dying to breathe in these abundant skies
So this is the way that I say I need You
This is the way that I say I love You
This is the way that I say I'm Yours
This is the way, this is the way
Learning to breathe
I'm learning to crawl
I'm finding that You and You alone can break my fall
I'm living again, awake and alive
I'm dying to breathe in these abundant skies

1. The word "y'all" is spelled Y-'-A-L-L. That's right the apostrophe' goes between the Y and the A. Y'all is a conjunction of you all. All of you Southerners who continue to spell it wrong, shame on you!
2. As we celebrate today, let us remember that technically is NOT an American holiday. Not one American signed the Declaration of Independence; those men were British citizens living in British colonies. More accurately, they were Virginians, New Yorkers, Georgians, North and South Carolinians, Pennsylvaniers, Marylanders, Rhode Islanders, Delawarians, New Jersians, Massachusians, New Hamshires, and Connecticutians. AND The Declaration was NOT signed on July 4, 1776; the resolution was ADOPTED by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.
Now I do not say all of this to downplay the importance of that document and what it's purpose was in the founding of this country, but please people, learn your history; the CORRECT history.
NO... ya'll is a conjuntion of ya all. Seriously! What kind of southern person are ya? Nobody in the south has "you" in their vocabulary to even make a conjunction with :)
When I go up tomorrow, I'll look to see if we have flannel boards for all the stories. I'm pretty sure there is one for Jonah and the fiery furnice, but I'm not sure.
