So Michael Phelps won a ton of gold medals. Pretty cool. I think the Olympics are great, and I love when the United States comes out in the lead.
But something caught me a little off guard.
Typically, when anyone from any nation wins a gold medal, they take the top of the podium and stand with great posterity and respect as their nation's anthem is playing and everyone is looking at their flag hoisted highest.
After the last event tonight (the 800 medley relay), however--which was won with vigor-- two of our nation's competitors (one was Phelps) laughed and joked around with each other through the entire national anthem.
Maybe the luster wears off after you've won 11 Olympic gold medals.
I wish that the Olympics were about doing a tremendous service for your country and less about simply what you accomplished by yourself and for yourself. I wish that some competitor being interviewed after a great victory would simply say, "It is an honor to be able to represent the country that I love. Thank you for that opportunity."
On the other hand, look me up after I win 11 gold medals and see how well I do with that. Hmm... |
