We had another great carving party this year - many thanks to everyone that came out. Everyone seemed to have a good time and I wanted to share some pics.
For those who might remember him, Jim Sells was sentenced yesterday to 17.5 years in federal prison for child pornography. It still boggles my mind that no one in our church saw this coming. I hope for his sake he repents, and finds some measure of forgiveness for himself.
My wife and I got to carve our first pumpkins for the year at our family pumpkin carving party. Jaclyn carved a raven in a cage and I carved a spiderweb. All in all I think they turned our rather well.
My boss was quoted today in an article about this year's Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Since the prize was for the discovery and application of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP).
His quote from the Oct. 9 edition of USA Today:
"I don't think it was a surprise to anyone. This really fits the definition of Nobel science," says biochemist Richard Armstrong of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, editor of the journal Biochemistry. "It's used to an unbelievable extent in biology, even in high schools, and it's had a major impact."
GFP was first isolated from jellyfish in 1962. Now, it's used rather ubiquitously in biochemistry and cell biology to follow cellular reactions and development in a biologically friendly way - no more harsh dyes or small molecules that may or may not tell you what you want to know. Very cool stuff.
