- I think I've lived here long enough to make a blanket statement: The best restaurant in Beaumont is Rockin' A Cafe. It's classic friendly people serving a meat, two vegetables, brownies, and sweet tea. It's a good way to end a week, start a week, whatever.
- Rockin' A Cafe has a sign above the register that reads as follows: Fat People Are Harder to Kidnap. I'm not sure how long this truism has been out there, but I laughed out loud...hard...when I saw it.
- Julie and I bought a 42" LCD T.V. last week. I'm not a huge TV watcherer until it comes to sports. ESPNHD + CBSHD + college football = one excited Bill.
- Starting a job transition this week. I'll be training a guy to take my spot, then I'll be moving to a Machinery position supporting about half the plant. It's something COMPLETELY different, which I like. You only live once, might as well try to learn everything. I also like how this company moves people around...
- I think my next Bible class project will be writing some high school material on Worship. So far I've got a Table of Contents. Any references would be nice...
- Julie and I are headed to the annual Kleinwood singing Friday night. Then we'll stay up all night at a buddy's apartment in Houston. Then we'll fly to Nashville for a vacation visit to see the folks. Should be fun.
The stars at NIGHT, are big and BRIGHT...whew, almost turned into a Texan there. Yikes.
I definitely want to throw some book info your way on that bullet point about worship. Don't let me forget it, but I don't have the info with me right now.
my family and i always went to dorothy's front porch...it's between port arthur and beaumont off memorial highway, i think??? it's a catfish place, and it is good! glad you guys are enjoying life out there!
Great article to read whodoyouthink. Definitely makes one consider What worship really means to them. It Will require more consideration on my part since it makes a strong argument that goes against a lot of sermons I have heard, or maybe did not hear correctly, over the years.
I’ve been to Italy since we spoke last. It. Was. Amazing. A few highlights…
- Driving a manual transmission in rush-hour Florence traffic is unwise…and fun.
- Don’t partake of the fruit of the vine in “quick-gulp” formation, especially if you’ve never tasted wine. It will burn and create a scene.
- The Vatican is very bizarre. It’s amazing how much the Catholic church bought and stole in the name of religion. At one point they even began destroying things seen as idolatry. Twas only a fad though...
- Venice was very cool…didn’t seem real.
- “Mandy” on our Tom-Tom GPS is one smart woman, even though she MADE me go against the grain on a one-way street once. Forgiven 70 x 7. To quote Jeremiah Wright, “IT’S IN THE BIBLE!!!”
That’s enough. See Julie’s blog for picture links.
4th of July weekend was nice. Drove 1100 miles round-trip to Memphis. Ate some BBQ, dominated at Mexican Train, visited the site of MLK’s assassination, and pinch-hit in the highschool Bible class back home. You ever been back home and seen who’s in highschool now? Crazy!
I’m excited about teach the highschool class the rest of the year. It will be my biggest challenge yet for a few reasons:
- Due to a corpulent 9th grade contingent, the class size is growing from 14 to 25.
- I’ve chosen to teach The Revelation. The more I study it, the more I think I’m going to enjoy it. I think I’m going to approach it in this way: Revelation closes the Bible by making us ask and answer a very important question: Is Jesus worth it?
I saw this on Dave Barry’s site and I cracked up laughing. Seriously, how does this pass through a focus group without any red flags.
-So the church you attended had real wine? Authentic
-I wonder what would happen to people who can't drive a manual?
-Good luck on the class, I'm sure the kids will enjoy it!
Disclaimer: this post is not intended to promote the drinking of wine or any such alcoholic beverage. In short, drinking is pointless, stupid, and inexcusable. Carry on..
The same thing happens when you take a big gulp of unfiltered apple cider vinegar (I take it for digestive purposes). Man, my throat burned and I started wheezing! Quite scary!
i'm really looking forward to our class sunday morning was great with all the other kids there..i think it is going to be a great experience for the younger kids who just moved up into our class.
We're definitely considering it. We spent last Sunday night planning all the different models we want to use. If only we could incorporate a potato cannon to give us some oomph at the end...
Update on the birds: They hatched, they grew up, and they’re gone. My house rules: you’re old enough to fly, you’re old enough for me to take your house and make you build your own.
Gas prices have risen a bit since we last talked. As a member of “the problem”, let me share some thoughts for your consideration. I’d like to hear what you think as well.
- Oil prices fell sharply. Hmm…and there were some that saw it coming. The apparent culprit is supply AND demand…weird. It’s interesting that ~90% of us have started making changes. I know we have. What changes are you making?
- Who profits? A very interesting stat: The government has made 3 times the profit off of gasoline as the top 5 oil companies have made on gas, jet fuel, plastics, rubbers, etc. One of the senators asked our VP how much he makes a year. Proper response: “With all due respect, Senator, that ain’t none yo beezwaxx.”
- The government’s big idea . They are adding 70kbd of supply to a country that needs 21Mbd…that’s a 0.33% increase. This is actually one of two ideas. The other is to set a ceiling for how much money oil companies can make and keep the rest for themselves. What a super idea! That’s a good way to keep us from improving and expanding our business to help supply the world its energy.
Ideal government action: protect us, give us infrastructure for growth incentive, and get out of the way. Instead of being embarrassed by your representation, we free people will expand our domestic supply of energy until we’re less dependent on others and we’re driving electric cars run by nuclear powerplants.
I know this whole $3.50+/gallon is rough. Anyone have any questions? I’d be happy to spew some oil industry propaganda for you.
That is…after Julie and I get back from ITALY!!! Woohoo!!!
I think we’re going to study the book of Revelation in the High School class next quarter. It’s incredible! I think my goal will be to make it everyone’s favorite book of the Bible.
We have oft discussed the plight of the oil companies in all of these hearings. Ryan really hit the roof last night when he heard Obama's plan to take the profits from the top 5 companies to give back to the people.
hope ya'll are having a great time in Italy which i'm sure ya'll are..revelations..hm.when i went to California that is what the class was studyin on there and it seem pretty interesting..so even though it is one of the hardest book to interpret..i'm looking forward to studyin it.
Night shift work is over. 41 nights straight with two nights off sprinkled in the middle.
Here's how you know you've been gone too long from your normal job.
Julie and I are headed to Tampa tomorrow for President brother-in-law's mini-graduation at FC. I think I'm gonna need to ride a rollarcoaster or two while I'm there.
Trip to Italy is a little over a month away. Can't. wait.
I think I'm going to preach Sunday on my favorite "Sunday School" story in the Bible: David and Goliath.
It's very weird, especially when you see the new dorms, the redesigned stud center, and cafeteria. And that they play society sports at nighttime now! What's that about?
I love the story of David and Goliath. Scholars say the common shekel weighed 0.4 ounces. Goliath's coat of mail = 125 lbs ... spearhead = 15 lbs. Brutal strong. Not just big ... but big and strong. Wonderful story of faith.
well if you haven't heard i decided to stay home and go to college at lamar but i am planning on moving out of my house just to get that experience so i am going to get to stay and soak up all the information you feed us next quarter after all.. =]
How did I miss you were in Beaumont? Sarah and I have driven through there like 5 times the past 2 years. We would've met you at IHOP or something. Well maybe now that we're moving down that way we can run into each other 5 hours is like next door neighbors in Texas!
i live in west Houston and am a member at the Alief church. i have family at Stonegate in Port Arthur. i have a cousin named Lonnie who i believe is attending some at Northwest or Downlen Rd with his wife Samantha.
yeah i use to post on politics but I lean too much toward wacko/controversial. I guess I could post a series of highlights from the Glenn Beck book, rather than a commentary from a Baptist on Numbers.
Straight 12-hour shifts coming to a close soon. Mental fatique setting in, but an overall good experience.
Crocs showed up at the house two days. Already by second favorite pair of shoes all time next to my old New Balance 900's. NB900s and my feet go together like two things that go together REALLY well.
Seeing Christian brethern once-a-week is not enough. If you're one of those people who only attends one service a week, you're an idiot.
My wife went to a Brian Regan show in Houston with some friends last Saturday whilst I worked. Grr... She did bring back a DVD and a "Cup of Dirt" t-shirt. Love it.
One minor benefit of working nights has been the chance to see the quarterfinals/semifinals of the Champions League on ESPN2 in the afternoons.
Trying to figure out what to teach in the High School class next quarter. I'm becoming a fan of reading several materials, books, resources, sermons, etc. and writing my own material so it flows through a topic/book like my brain does. I'm thinking about "Prayer" as a topic...I don't pray enough I don't think.
Good book on Prayer by P. Yancey, FC Lectures '88 I think on Prayer & Providence. Great lecture from Sewell Hall on Prayer. I'll let you know if anything else comes to mind.
I don't think any of us really pray enough. Not in our house anyway. I think that would be a great topic. And YEAH for night shift being almost over. Ugh, I don't know how you did it. I guess you can do just about anything for a little while.
