Zach got a call around 2pm today that we could go to the island to "look and leave" today until 6pm. We rushed to 45 and got to the island. Thankfully our actual apartment is doing just fine. No damage! There are some areas of the complex that are damaged though. Here is one pic that I took today. I will post more later.
This is of the bridge that crosses the lake we live by. You can't see our apartment from this view, but as you can see, the apartments are still standing. Thank God!
Here is the parking lot. It's obvious that there was flooding b/c of all the sand/mud.

Zach and I evacuated Galveston on Thursday and made our way to Derek and Amber's with my two nieces. We only stayed until Saturday around noon. We then headed back to Santa Fe to find my sister's house with out power (but running on a generator). The floors were all wet, and not from any flooding. Just having the windows open down here w/all the humidity caused a lot of condensation. Today Zach and I tried to get to Galveston via Hwy 6 and 45, but were turned around both times. We just wanted to see if our apartment made it out OK. We are thinking about trying tomorrow with my UTMB badge, but don't plan on beeing successful... Today we saw ABC13 sky eye broadcast an aerial video of the West side of Galveston. They were going from west to east on the sea wall and when they finally got to where our apartments should be, they panned around to look at Moody Gardens and thereby skipping us! : ( It is a bad feeling being denied access to your home. But, I don't think I have much room to talk considering all those homes shown that have been destroyed. Tonight we are staying with my other sister Aimee who also lives in Santa Fe. Thankfully she has power. I am continually reminding myself of all the blessings that remain even if all our material possessions get washed away!
***UPDATE***
Today (Monday) we saw our apartment complex from a distance from channel 2's sky 2 helicopter. It looks as if it is still standing! yay! : )
I mentioned on Z's site, but the emergency email system is no longer in effect. The usual UTMB email is supposed to be up and running. Love you guys soooooooooo much and glad you are OK. Our love to ALL down there.
I have been praying for you! :-) I hope all turns out well, and please feel free to call us if you need ANYTHING!! We are coming back into town tomorrow and will be staying with my parents until our power is back.
Monday, June 16 I am starting a new job at UTMB. I will be working as a PCT (patient care tech) which is like a CNA. The good thing about working at UTMB is that since I am a student nurse at UTMB I am allowed to practice some of my skills. I've heard that I will get to draw blood and start IVs. I don't know if they will let me give meds since I am not in clinicals. I shall see.
I learned a neat trick when it comes to dusting the house (thanks to Amber). If you save the old fabric softener sheets from the dryer you can use them as dusting cloths. They work very well to pick up and hold the dust! I started saving mine today. : )
Just recently I was awarded a scholarship for my schooling next year! It will help cover a big chunk of tuition, which makes Zach and I very happy! Also, this past Monday Zach was inducted into an Occupational Therapy Honor Society, Pi Theta Epsilon. Zach was also voted to be the president of it! : )
Also, for those of you who don't already know: Gospel Meeting at Bacliff Church of Christ starting June 22!
dust, who dusts anymore? J/K. So, you guys are doing sooo well and I'm proud of you both, wow! good job. You'll be seeing Gary and his friends tomorrow I guess. Love you both and miss you.
I am proud of both of you. I know yall have a long promising future ahead and I am sure you will both make the best of every day that God has blessed us with.
Thanks :-) I wish I knew that Larry could come with me to the childbirth classes... they're in the evening, but it really depends on whether or not he's done for the day... Happy Belated Anniversary... Miss you guys!
does that count as catching a fish IF you have no control and it ends up in your ARM???? Now that is a fish story!!! looks like you guys had a great time.
You really need to watch it close. Brian waited for 2 days before going to the Dr. He thought he got it all out, but there was a piece still stuck in his hand & a plastic surgeon had to cut it out. Glad you are okay!
