On D-Day the 29th division stormed Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. Men who didn't know how to swim drowned, some from the weight of the gear. Some didn't get past the beach that day. Others like my Paw-Paw who served in the 29th division, didn't know how to swim, still stormed the beach, and lived to tell about it.
My Granddaddy Wyatt, didn't talk much about the war except that he and some of his friend took the German people in the concentration camps after the war to show them just what they had been supporting. He showed them the bodies of the jews, blacks, and other "imperfect" people burned, decaying, working like slaves, gassed to death. He showed them just what standing by and doing nothing supports.
A lot of people do not agree with the war. And while i can't say that i agree completely with the situation we've found ourselves in, selfishly, i'd rather us be there than them here. On 911 the terrorists had the sole purpose to kill as many Americans as they could and to knock us down. They suceeded for a little while, but as they quickly understood, we are not a country to just sit back and take it. I fully support our troops. And I don't think you have to agree with the motive for the war to support those who have volunteered to put themselves in harm's way to fight for something they believein. They've chosen this life to keep a country free. To die for men and women and children they've never met, will never meet, and for a lot of people who could care less whethere they live or die. But for some reason, these brave men and women of the military have decided to put their lives on the line every day for us to live a life of luxury. I love traveling and i loved going to germany and austria and france. It was gorgeous. But being away made me love America that much more.
Our flag isn't just cloth, its a symbol to the world of freedom, of liberty, of choices in life good or bad. Even if you choose not to support the war or support the troops, men and women died to give you that choice. They looked to the flag when they felt they couldn't go on much more and it gave them the strength to continue. NO matter what the politics of a war are, you should never ignore the troops that are over there fighting. ALWAYS support them. always love that their choice in life is to protect those they dn't know. honor the flag that represents this country. honor the men and women who have died looking at the flag, knowing it was worth it. Hoping that someone somwhere would appreciate their death for this country.
i leave you with a moving video i found on you tube about the ragged old flag. it's only 3 minutes long, i think hyou can take time to watch it. Listen to the words that johnny cash says. listen to every word and understand just what all our flag, and in turn our country, has been through to get to where we are today.
oh yeah. from what i understand though, he is pretty devout catholic. now like that means anything really. but he is so funny. i just thought his delivery was fantastic.
