A Superhero's favorite movie

If you are going to have a superhero over for movie night, it is best to know what kind of films they enjoy. So if the Dark Knight or the Man of Steel will supply the popcorn, which movie should you que up on your Netflix account?

It happens more times than you might expect...

Batman = Die Hard.

It makes perfect sense that Batman would be a fan -- and not just because it's the single greatest American action movie ever made. Die Hard is, after all, the story of a normal man -- a normal man with training, but a normal man nonetheless -- doing what he can against impossible odds to protect the innocent, against an exceptional thief with a deceptive and elaborate plan relying on theatrics and misdirection. He's helped by one honest cop, but hindered by other police officers and law enforcement agents who are incompetent, corrupt, or otherwise incapable of dealing with criminals operating at this level. And despite suffering through some pretty brutal injuries, his determination drives him to succeed by crawling through air vents, terrifying the bad guys, and, most importantly, dealing with being outnumbered and outgunned by outsmarting his enemies.

And at the end? Not only does the good guy beat the criminals, but in doing so, he gets back the family that he's separated from at the beginning of the movie! If that's not Batman's idea of a happy ending, then I don't know what is.

Superman seems pretty obvious:

There is no way that Clark Kent doesn't absolutely love The Wizard of Oz. It's the story of a kid from Kansas with a dog that gets flown to a strange land where the people view her as the Other, initially fearful of her ability to effortlessly, accidentally defeat a great evil. But by doing her best to help the people she meets, and by standing up against someone who would hurt others, she wins out, and gets the greatest reward of all: Returning home to her family and the people who love her. There's even a scary bald dude who lives in a city of glowing green crystals.

At the very least, Superman has brought down the house at JLA Karaoke Night with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," and given the color scheme of that movie, I'm pretty sure it's why he decided to wear a blue costume with red boots.

Anyway those are my thoughts right now. What do you think?

What might other superheroes like to watch on movie night?

For Spiderman: Charlotte's Web, with it's positive portrayal of an intelligent, selfless spider who uses her web for the good of another.

The Punisher would probably like The Departed, or No Country For Old Men, because they would remind him why he does what he does.
Prof. Xavier would be a Inception fan, Although through out the whole movie he'll probably be thinking "why not just make the person tell you there secrets" :)

Hey Josh, by the way. What if Fury's use of Coulson to bring the Avengers together involved a deception much bigger than lying about where his Captain America cards were found? What if he was lying about Coulson's death? All we saw was the medical team arriving and next thing we see is Fury telling them he died. We saw a blade go through his chest, but he still had time to fire a gun and share some dialogue with Fury. If it had gone through his heart, he shouldn't have been able to do all that, so the worst it could have been was a punctured lung. I find it hard to believe that the Shield helicarrier medical team, with all their futuristic technology, couldn't patch up a punctured lung.

Second acts of (probable) trilogies tend to go darker. A story involving a loss of trust/falling out between the Avengers and the government would fit the bill, and has been used at various times in the comics. Cap and Iron Man's negative reaction to being manipulated by Fury/Shield in this and other ways would be a good lead-in to that. And we've already seen hints of the darker, more manipulative side of Shield with "the Council".

    Also, people love Coulson.

Him not being dead wouldn't actually be as crazy as it sounds. All we need now is a deleted scene of him in a hospital bed and Fury comes in and says, "It worked." And Coulson says, "They're gonna be so ticked off."

If my childhood plans had panned out...

My job would need a fedora and a whip

I would be married to Wonder Woman

My car would require me to hoodslide and then crawl in through the window

My house would be the Hall of Justice

My meals would always include a bowl of Fruity Pebbles

My backyard would have a pool next to a stage where the Beach Boys played all the time

My pet would be Battlecat

My best friend would be Chewbacca

On the weekends we would hang out with Spider-Man, Iceman and Firestar and just be amazing friends

My kids would be named Optimus Prime and Snake-Eyes

(but my current life is pretty awesome too)

By the end of this week....

I will be done with my Master's Program.

If I had finished a doctoral program you could call me Dr. Collier.

But since I am getting my Master's Degree, I think I will have people start calling me "Master Collier."

It sounds so much cooler. And I am pretty sure it comes with a light saber.
  • wifelet
    Nope. Not gonna happen.

Congratulations man. I'm sure it's going to take a few weeks to decompress after you get done. It takes your body a week or two to realize that it's finished :P
