3D World Studio
I downloaded the trial of 3D World Studio. It's a level editor with some great features. It looks like it'd be something that's pretty easy to pick up and run with. I'm going to try to model some simple landscapes with it and then maybe some small game project would be appropriate...? *hint, hint*
Apparently it is easy to implement the levels in several game development languages like DarkBasic Pro, Torque, Blitz3D, etc... Also, it can export Half-Life level format (HL mod, anyone?). I think that it really has some potential for fledgling game designers.
If anyone else wants to throw something together, download the trial and see what you can do.

UPDATE:
It appears as if this company, The Game Creators, have a ton of other awesome tools for helping beginners create games. I'm really interested in a few because they allow you to get your feet wet in game development without having to delve too deep into code (or at all with some tools). These can be great stepping stones into the game industry...
Here's another cool tool I'm going to try out: FPS Creator.

I have a neat idea too: How about a Halo map-pack for HL2 or Unreal 2k4? I think it'd be awesome to play the Halo maps in those games and it'd be a cool first project to rebuild professional maps as a mod for another game...
Any thoughts?
FYI, Goldeneye Source is up and running...
I started reviewing the tutorials again yesterday, so if we do anything, I think UnrealEd would be my pick for a level editor.
Oh, and BTW: UnrealEd is free. It comes with Unreal and I can always make copies of the instructional DVD if anyone wants to learn as well! It's pretty awesome! =)
