Is something wrong with the BCS?

Yes.

You know something is wrong with the system when a team with this schedule:

Oregon
Miami (OH)
Fresno State
Bowling Green
UC Davis
Tulsa
Hawaii
San Jose State
Louisiana Tech
Idaho
Utah State
Nevada
New Mexico State

is being considered a serious National Title contender. Any system that allows THIS schedule to get you anywhere close to the NC game is messed up. If THIS schedule can get you considered for the NC game, then what incentive is there for you to schedule non cream-puffs?

its a huge judgement call...sometimes they *might* actually have the best team in the country. Other times it might *seem life* they have the best team in the country and then get slaughtered.

I think it'd be nice to mix it up, unless of course 2 powerconference schools go undefeated.

and its got to be hard to get an IDAHO school into a major conference. Theres no recruiting base there and its just not a very media-excited place to go. If you consider the major conferences, the only conference they would be close enough to to be considered would be the PAC 10 (which I think would be pretty cool for BOISE) but I'm not sure the Pac10 would go for that. Other conferences are just too far away. They unfortunately, have a school that is in "no mans land" and i imagine it would be hard for a poor school like them to get accepted in a better conference.

Maybe FIU should be in BCS consideration just for scheduling both UF and UA. I know they get the big payouts for those games, but man, that's crazy. I guess the scheduling part was more on UF and UA's parts, because they needed the cupcakes.

We may have more than 2 powerconference schools go undefeated this year. Cincy could easily run the table in the Big East, and Iowa is playing reminiscent of the joke Ohio St. team that won the title against Miami earlier this decade: winning at the end of every game and never looking dominant, all while playing a joke Big 10 schedule. Does anyone know the record for most undefeated teams going into bowl season? We could have 6 this year.

If I recall, I saw that there are only four schools to not play a I-AA (sorry FCS) school: Notre Dame, UCLA, USC, and Washington (though they have recently scheduled an FCS for 2011).

Make no mistake: Boise State is lobbying for a invitation to a bigger and better conference. All of the non-power 6 schools AD's do it (trust me, I've talked to one, and he has talked to other AD's who do the same)...
Another point to the Boise State situation....
If you are Power 6 AD and BSU's AD calls offering a 1-1 or even a 2-1, why take it? They've shown they can beat the Power 6 school's on a consistent basis. You want to schedule games OOC games that you have a good chance to win or provide you with a chance to show yourself to nation. If you are USC and you beat Boise State-so what, you are supposed to. If you lose, you get plastered all over ESPN. There is also no recruiting advantage to play Boise. The top recruit in the state is a 3 star QB. And if Boise wins, Boise is able to improve their recruiting base and get more talent in, improving their program.
There is little, if anything, to gain by playing Boise if you are a Power 6 school
That must be for Power 6 schools.

I agree with you on everything you said, except one point. Is it safe to say that a USC-BSU game would be like any other non-conference game for them in that it's a no-win situation? I'm not sure that everyone would say USC is supposed to beat BSU, especially given BSU's track record (like you said) against BCS conferences. Good points, though.

That is interesting that of the 4 teams to have not played a I-AA school that 3 are PAC-10 teams.

I think that it is for all FBS schools. It might only be for schools that were in the FBS when the NCAA began to allow a win against FCS competition to count (70s I think I recall seeing). Is there are particular school you are thinking of that has not played a FCS team?

I can agree with that last statement...that boise being undefeated doesnt mean as much as an undefeated UF or Bama, but when all the power conference teams have one loss, why not give Boise a shot? I'm just kind of tired of seeing "well woohoo LSU is playing Texas in the National Championship...who'da thought?"

I really do completely understand that, and thats why it is the way it is. I just regret that sometimes a smaller school may *actually* have the best team, but just not get the chance to win it. I think we're all on the same page here.

If Florida and Texas are the best teams in the nation. Fine, great, good, whatever, let them play in the game. I don't think it's right to penalize Boise, if they go undefeated (and no one else does), to overlook Boise in the national championship game. I would love to see a Florida v Boise matchup, bowl or regular season.
    Bring on a playoff

the point is that florida's and texas' strencth of schedule is far greater than Boise's...so you'd be (sort of) penalizing those teams for having a difficult schedule.

Or just extend the season (keeping reg bowl games) and input playoffs. :) problem solved. Settle it on the field.
